Big Fish Audio started way back in 1986, when sampling was still pretty much in its infancy, first making their name with the Prosonus range of orchestral sample libraries. Since those pioneering beginnings, BFA have grown to become the world’s largest distributor of sample libraries, but they continue to produce hundreds of their own high-quality sample libraries and virtual instruments, including the highly acclaimed Vir2 range.
We’ve all read horror stories about copyright restrictions on the use of commercial sample libraries, but BFA have always been totally committed to providing license-free content. Perhaps this refreshingly liberal philosophy is one reason why BFA’s sounds have been used on more charting songs and top film and television soundtracks than it’s possible to count!
In this month’s competition, BFA are very generously giving away three prize bundles to lucky SOS readers. The grand prize, worth an incredible £1695 $2679, comprises five premium virtual instruments and 10 sample libraries, spanning a wide range of musical genres, including indie, country, Motown, metal, R&B, hip-hop, acoustic, ambient and rock. Of course, with over 140GB of content in total, installation could take forever — so to make life easy on the winner, there’s the choice to download the libraries and loops or have them pre-loaded on a shiny new Glyph one-terabyte professional portable hard drive. No self respecting producer or composer would turn their nose up at that!
Among the virtual instruments are three from the Vir2 collection: Electri6ity, Mojo Horn Section and Studio Kit Builder. Reviewed in SOS September 2010, Electri6ity is a deeply sampled, 25.8GB virtual instrument that recreates eight classic electric guitars “offering high levels of intricate detail, authenticity and tonal variety”. Mojo Horn Section, reviewed in March 2010, is “a great sounding library” with “useful and usable articulations”. Finally from Vir2 is Studio Kit Builder, a complete encyclopaedia of acoustic drum kits, comprising over 130 pieces that can be mixed and matched.
Also included in the grand prize are the RiG Urban Workstation and BFA’s new Swagg synth instrument, both of which are designed for use in modern urban genres.
The two runners-up will receive licenses for the Studio Kit Builder virtual instrument, and the beautifully crafted sample libraries Acoustic Indie Pop — which received the maximum five-star rating in the SOS review — and Pop n’ Soul Guitars, an extensive collection of guitar loops for pop, urban and soul genres in various sample formats.
