New acoustic panels - air gap or no?...

I have two new fibreglass panels (1150mm x 575mm x 50mm) to go on my back wall... ... so, following on from recent discussions elsewhere on the subject, will I see any
real benefit from spacing the panels with a 50mm air gap from the wall? Or will
this be so subtle in this case as that I might as well just fit them flush? Discuss...

Spacing them from the wall will extend the absorption to a lower frequency and it is worth
doing if you can.

+1.
Though, two panels likely won't make a massive difference in the room. I would certainly
suggest enough to hit the reflection points as well as some corner bass traps, and if its
necessary, add from there.

Indeed.
I already have two corner chunks to go in the back corners, two
panels for the back side wall, two panels for left/right reflection points, two larger
front corner chunks and a large ceiling cloud.
I'm also going to get a couple
more panels to go behind the monitor speakers, a panel on the back angle of my console and
possibly an angled panel between the front wall and ceiling.
This is the front
of my room so far...

Thanks
So, to slightly alter the question...
If I'm now using 100mm of space from
the wall (ie: 50mm panel + 50mm air gap), would I get better performance by just having a
100mm thick panel and no air gap?
(I realise 100mm panel + 100mm gap would be
even better, but 100mm total is pretty much the maximum I can afford to use in this small
room).

Not really, and it would be a lot heavier and a lot more expensive.

I can get the 100mm thick panels for about
1/3 more cost than for the 50mm, so the cost isn't prohibitive, but if there is no likely
performance gain, then perhaps I should go with 50mm panel + 50mm air, as you suggest.
The weight isn't too bad. The panels I am using are fibreglass surrounded by 2mm
MDF, so a 1150mm x 575mm x 50mm panel is only 3kg.

Sorry Hugh but I must disagree. There is a significant difference between a 2" panel with
a 2" gap and a 4" panel from what I've seen(especially in corners, for obvious reasons).
And fiberglass/mineral wool isn't all too heavy anyways . I recommend making 100mm thick panels as a minimum unless your goal is only to tame
reflections.

*Update* I have ordered 100mm thick panels for the back wall. I have used my
50mm panels on the side walls, with a small air gap... http://www.4x12.com/side_panels.htmlI have also just put
up a new page about my folding door bass trap... http://www.4x12.com/door_trap.html

Wow!!!!! That room looks amazing! I wouldn't get anything done, just sit in it
with a sense of serenity and feeling of pride! I don't think I can step into my
own little box anymore, you have ruined me. Ritchie
