Soundcraft TS12 - Recapping
      #991968 - 08/06/12 03:53 PM
Hey chaps

I have an old Soundcraft TS12 and its in need of a little love. I want to give it a good recapping, but I haven't done anything like this before on this scale, so was looking for a little help!
I'm handy with soldering, and have a reasonalble understanding of the electronics, but I'm not sure where I should be looking for relevant caps, pots, switches ect.....

Any advice is a massive help, and greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Steve

Does it sound bad ?
If not - seriously, leave it alone !!

Do particular channels sound worse than others ?
Thats where you start.
Failing that, start at the main L&R, testing all the aux inputs too.

Are the faders rough and scratchy ?
If they are P&G faders ( like the ones used in the similarly aged and styled 2400 series, you are looking at a serious bill to replace the brushes and tracks.

Are the pots scratchy ?
Can you get the exact spec, given its obvious age?

Do you know how to test for a faulty capacitor ?
If you can test a cap, you can make a judgement on wether or not to replace it.

More Qs than As, but you get my drift.

Hey mate, thanks!

Well some chans are noisey, others seem ok..... so I'll look at those ones first.
I would like to get the most out of it though, and thought that while I'm at it..........

The P & G faders are fine I think so thats good at least.

Steve! You lakky boy!

I have just downloaded the user manual for that mixer and MOST unusually it gives full schematics as well as a block signal diagram.

The mixer also has a built in 20Hz-20kHz line up oscillator and I would strongly suggest the purchase of a decent, analogue scaled audio millivoltmeter with an FSD of at least down to 1mV. A modest 'scope or a computer app' for same (any decent mVm will have a scope op) would also be invaluable.
And no, don't go changing caps willy nilly. If the LF resonse is up to snuff and distortion on spec (lots of computer apps for measuring THD)leave well alone. Lot of switching jacks in it so invest in a few cans of Deoxit!

Much of the circuitry and toplogy seems to have Duggy Self's stamp on it? Get his book.

Dave.

Actually, that was always one of Soundcraft's strengths -- for their professional products, anyway.

Thanks Dave!

I'm looking forward to getting her up to speed!
Its mainly just a couple of noisey chans which I'll do and leave the rest!
Do you know where I can get the switches and pots from?

Cheers!
