When the current FretKing series was launched, DanBo and I spoke to Trev Wilkinson and he
was very proud of them. After years spent getting quality control sorted in his offshore
factories, these were an attempt to make a make better guitar than the 'cheap and
cheerful' Vintage brand - which are fine axes for the money, but a little more spent
upgrading them makes them into good, workhorse guitars. The FretKing are already finished
better, with better quality components and a few nice tweaks.
This does move
them into a higher price bracket and that gives a lot of choice...
As with all
guitars, there's no substitute for trying them out and checking that they match your
needs. But if I were spending that much money I wouldn't rule them out.
(actually, I'd just order a new Gordon Smith ..doh!)
