What a night !!
      #784825 - 05/11/09 01:38 AM

I've been jamming at my local monthly blues night for about 6 months.

It was a good evening with a top notch old guy on bass and 3 other good players + me (mediocre but having lots of fun).

There was a guy just drinking who seemed to be paying some attention and just after most of the others had gone he pulled out a guitar....

A Maccaferri plastic guitar - I've never even heard of this thing. Apparently his was pretty much smashed up and he repaired it with car body filler acoustically it sounds shite, but here is where it got good.
he had fixed in a marshall mini amp inside the guitar.

I have never heard such a beautiful 'dirtbag' kind of sound in my life. closest I can get would be C16 / seasick steve but this was better.

He played mississippi / texas blues and it was really cooking, another guy played some slide and it was very cool. I played some Metallica riffs and it still rocked.

He put the Maccaferri away and produced....

....a National biscuit reso from the 1930s (the wear on the neck at the headstock was really deep)

very similar to this one:-

I got a play on this too.

so I've had a load of fun and played two very special guitars.

I remember reading an article about Maccaferri guitars years ago but I've only ever seen one, and that was in a guitar exhibition in Leeds which was very much, look but don't touch. It's hard to imagine plastic being a cutting edge material but I expect it would be like seeing a carbon fibre guitar now. I can only imagine what it must have been like to play one. I'm so jealous! It must have been a great night for you.

All together now: The Mississippi Delta was shining like a plastic guitar...
