Coming off the back of the Hendrix debarcle, another PR disaster for Gibson?

That is pretty bad, but is it really a Gibson neck.
Not the smartest of moves
though whoever designed that neck.

I read through a lot of the posts on that link and can see that it's caused a lot of
fuss.
Where I think they are going wrong is in focusing on the volute as a
technical fix to the problem of the truss rod weakening the neck. However, the volute as a
design feature on stringed instruments has a long history that pre-dates truss rods by the
odd few centuries. Yes, it provides additional strength in a part of the neck that is
traditionally a weak spot, but that is only part of the story. It also adds mass which
makes a tonal difference, and it also provides a different feel in the hand which is the
main reason for it's use.
Whether you like a neck with a volute is a matter of
personal preference. But to argue that it is in the wrong place is misinformed.

If it makes
it hard to play an Fmaj7, i'd argure it's in the wrong place

No, but you
could argue that it's in the wrong place for your technique. I know a few classical
players who would get along with it very well the way they were taught to place the thumb
on the back of the neck.
But to be fair, it is pretty much at the limit of
where it could be located practically. And that does make it a very acquired taste.
