Mic'd guitar amp to powered stage monitor
      #996506 - 06/07/12 01:36 PM
Has anyone tried this? I get frustrated with the sound engineer never giving me enough of my guitar in the stage monitor so I'm thinking why don't I just split the mic on the amp and route one line to my own personal powered monitor which I can control the volume on. This would be in addition to the monitors on the stage for stage mix.

But before shelling out for a powered monitor, I'd like to know if anyone has ever tried this? How about you sound engineers, is this a bad idea?

Get an amp tilter. You've almost certainly got enough noise coming out of the amp, but it's pointing at your knees and you don't (I hope!) have ears down there.

Grab just beat me to it, but, you've already shelled out for a powered monitor - your amp! Set IT where you can hear it and let the FOH engineer do whatever.

I've been tilting my amp up on the floor in front of me (beside the floor wedge) on larger gigs. (Of course if you have a stack that won't work) Keeps stage volume lower, doesn't bleed into other mics. Then if audience needs front fill, use a wedge or whatever with full mix turned around.

Best,
Rick

Well stated! I'm playing a gig tonight in a bar but at this point I do not know whether the amp will be mic'd. If so, I'll try the lean the amp in front of me. Thx.

Or put it on a chair. You will tend to get a cleaner sound anyway if the cab is not coupling directly with the stage.

Dave.

I've been using one of these for about 10 years now. It's light, hard wearing and folds flat to about 40cm long. I also invested in a Sennheiser e606 which can be dangled against the front of your amp (stops you needing a mic on a stand if you're short of space). The sound guys I've come across tended to like the 606's sound and they'll probably appreciate your attempts to cut down your own onstage noise.
