Urgent Help Required - Kurzweil PC3
      #991869 - 07/06/12 10:09 PM
Hi,

I did a big gig at the weekend and when I was off stage, some idiot just pulled the power on my keyboard rig without shutting it down properly. Everything else seems OK except my Kurzweil PC3. When I switched it on this evening, it just gets stuck on the Initializing scanner screen. It just freezes. I have have tried switching the PC3 on whilst pressing the EXIT button to try and reinstall the OS but this doesn't work either.

I know not to touch anything when the PC3 is booting up but I have a horrible feeling the someone has fried it.

Any ideas? I am desperate because I have another gig on Saturday night.

Cheers.

Guy

I've seen suggestions that noisy internal or external controller knobs/wheels can cause a boot up freeze. Might be worth turning all the controls fully down, unplugging any external pedals and trying another reboot. I've also heard of this being caused by loose inter-board plugs & sockets internally... But you're probably best contacting the k support people.

Thanks for the advice Hugh. Thankfully, by switching it off and on a few times then leaving it, it seems to have 'sorted itself out' It took a couple of hours though. I have checked the Kurzweil website, and there is an upgrade available which helps sort the problem. I will upgrade my PC3 after the gig on Saturday. (I don't want to tempt fate!!!)

I have learnt a valuable lesson here. Keep everyone away from your gear who you don't trust. I was playing at a festival and was having some photos taken back stage. During this time, some 'stage-hand' simply pulled the plugs out the back of all my equipment and dragged it off-stage ready for the next band.

You live, you learn!!

It shouldn't make a difference once the unit has booted. The initial boot (as you rightly say) merely calibrates the keyboard AFAIK. I'd be slightly suspicious and keep an eye on it.

The old 'turn it on and leave it' approach goes right back to the old K-series and was usually when the battery had failed, but your PC3 is way too new for that..

The best advice I can give now is : back up EVERYTHING from the unit NOW. Twice. And double check by opening your save file and checking. You need to do it anyway before the update but double check as more than once I've accidentally not saved things right and have lost stuff. Fortunately I was able to go back to a previous backup.
