Djs and headphones.

Hi there! Any opinions on why djs prefer headphones over iems??? I am a dj my
self the last 5 years and i would say that if you give me headphones and iems with exact
the same techs and price i choose headphones just because i can put them in and out very
easy and fast when i beatmatch/mix. p.s. i'm talking about djs who use their
ears and not theis eyes to mix

I think you answer your own question, headphones are easy to put on and take off (which
DJ's do every few seconds) IEM's are designed to stay in place for an extended period of
time (they are actually very easy to insert but can be fiddly to remove and are most
comfortable when left alone).

Decent headphones sound loads better than IEMs (or at least, affordable IEMs).
But headphones generally offer less isolation.

Also - DJs often like to listen one-eared while they line things up - not easy with IEMs.

lets face it, most DJs wouldn't even know what an IEM is!!... and they are a bit pointless
for a DJ.. musicians only wear IEMs because they'd look stupid with headphones on
stage.
and, as has been said already, its easier for a DJ to take headphones
on/off etc.
I guess its the same reason why people generally don't use IEMs
when in recording studios - because they don't need to.

OTOH I've just spent £250 on a pair of custom IEM's...... at
that price I'll wear them in bed........

Because they swap back and forth between one ear listening and
two ear listening and it's normally much easier with headphones.
Proper IEMs
are far more fiddly as they normally involve custom ear moulds.
You also have
to be very careful with IEMs - putting them in and out - or you can damage the eardrum
with the pressure/suction if you don't do it properly.

As a hard working DJ for me there are various reasons
1. cost - suitable pair of
cans £50-£70
2. ease of use, 1 ear both ears, left/right
2. need to be able
to hear auntie marge when she asks for abba
1. if you don't wear cans, you don't
look like a dj, just a regular guy
2. if a guest needs to hear a track its easy to
give them a set of cans
NB - I do know what IEM is btw. Not sure that Tom
Cruise was the best person top play Ethan Hunt though
