Recording with Allen & Heath ZED 24
      #988497 - 20/05/12 12:51 PM
Hey Guys,

Wasn't sure wether to put this in live or recording, but its recording a live gig.. So yeah.

I have an Allen & Heath ZED 24 mixing console. At a gig I connect my mac to it and record using Logic 9 and the LR post of the desk. (Normally I use Aux 3 - 4 but I had some FX units on them). However, even with a tiny level on the FOH, the signal would peak and distort in Logic.

Any idea how I can pad it?

Thanks

Are you just recording the stereo out? Isn't using a laptop and DAW a bit overkill? I've used a Minidisc HiMD recorder very successfully for that, perhaps a different digital stereo recorder (from which you can transfer directly into the computer) would work?

Yeah just the stereo output of the desk. Not sure whats so overkill about me and my laptop? The desk has a usb output built in..

Ah, sorry, I thought it was an audio signal you were recording. If it's coming over USB I don't have any suggestions

I haven't used the USB out on my Zed desks, but a quick look at the pic suggests that you are doing everything fine. Are you sure you have selected the LR Post (button up) option. If you have, then in theory you will get no signal into Logic when your main faders are fully down. Is this the case?

Hi Bob,

Yep I tried all options - Aux, LR Pre and Post. All resulting in the signal being too hot..

This is also a problem in WIN 7 which I had with a ZED10. You need to turn down the gain of whatever "sees" the usb input. I know jack of macs but the boys at A&H were very helpful, bell'em.

Note too that the usb signal from my 10 at least was very good and the 16bit limitation really does not matter for "noisy" live recording.

Dave.

I had the same experience with a Zed 24 USB on Win XP PC with audacity, far too much level even with everything on minimum.

Have you turned down the input volume in the Settings app?

This is how it works in Win7...

Right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.

L click Recording Devices (for some reason a usb AI shows in W7 as a microphone!)
L click "usb Audio CODEC (you might have to re start the computer)
L click Properties.
L click Levels. This will be at 100, drag it back to 10.

"OK" Rock and roll. Note also that the meters on the ZED will now roughly agree with DAW levels.

Dave.
