Blown HF driver
      #993437 - 18/06/12 03:48 PM
I have one of these: http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_box_pa202a.htm - and recently leant it to a friend of mine for a gig where he just needed a monitor. Got it back, didn't check it, bought it out to chuck some music through at a get-together, no top end... Hmm it must all be rolled off on the mixer, no... Lean my ear down, diddly squat coming out of the HF driver blah! I've never blown a speaker before, so not sure what the situation would be. I messaged thomann and they linked me to a replacement diaphragm that would be about 25 quid delivered. - http://www.thomann.de/gb/diaphragma_fuer_pa_300_p.htm - I'm happy to pay it and the 'friend' would probably give me the money for it. Just don't want the hassle if it wouldn't fix it. Would it completely cut out if it was that?

Hope someone can shed a bit of light on how to fix it. Don't want to spend too much as it's not an expensive speaker.

Christian.

How do you know it's the driver that is blown and not the amp? The page you linked to says this thing is bi-amped, so it could be the amp, or even the cross-over in front of the amp. Have you taken any electrical measurements?

Pull the driver, put a meter on the leads to see if there's continuity. If not, there's the problem...

I got my rubbish ebay multimeter out and it showed no continuity. Double checked it by trying to run something high passed through the driver, nothing. Hooked the HF amp output of the speaker to another speaker, and sure enough it worked so it's definitely the HF driver. From this, would you say just the diaphragm replacement would do the job?

Thanks for the responses, Christian.

Yes, I'd go for the diaphragm. It is fairly encouraging that Thomann stock the spares for this at a reasonable price.

James.

The one thing that always seems to be the weak link at this price point is the top end. DON'T lend it again or if you do put a limiter across it.At least this is an easy fix. Dave
