JBL CBT70J oppinion
      #998456 - 17/07/12 07:15 PM
Hello.

I am looking for oppinions on the JBL CBT70J.

I have a friend who has a pub and he is a little crazy. He wants to have a pair of speakers that are classy, be used for ambiance 90% of time, but still have enough power to sustain a gig, or party when needed. He wanted to go with BOSE, as he is a fan, but I steered him out of that line of thought and showed him these JBLs. Now my question is: did you heard these? Do they sound good enough for a 12mx8m rhomb room? Coupled with one JBL PRX 618XLF sub, do they sound powerfull enough to sustain a party??

He cannot mount regular speakers, as the space is really limited and has to go with the smallest speakers possible. I just wanted to know if they are allright, or are meant for some other purpose and the advertised 500W RMS are "real" or not.

Thanks

Live performance needs 'presence', volume or whatever you want to call it. Background music is, well, in the background. Would you drive a van all the time in case you decide to go crazy at the supermarket? Thought not.

Best keep the two things separate and get something for each that is tailored for the job - or get decent ambient speakers and hire the rig for the gigs. Put another eway, I'd rather have nail-clippers and a Bowie knife than a Swiss Army Knife.

12 x 8 is not very big, so they might just do, but there are far better and cheaper solutions. They are a sort of mini line-arrays and are ideal for very small folk music gigs when combined with a sub, or for PA in churches, where they have become quite popular.

As Tacitus stated, a nice hi-fi for background Musak and a regular small PA for gigs. We use banks of JBL TR225 for studio parties ( Thomann web page ) or several small Genelecs dotted all over the place for headphone-less foldback. A couple of JBL JRX125 with a JBL Eon 518S Active Subwoofer should do for such a small room.

Thanks for your answers. As I said, he's a little crazy and wants a all-in-one setup that's small enough, but still have power when needed, because he can't/won't put a system for background music and a power setup for the party. It's tough... Oh, and should look nice...

I am now considering convincing him to get something like a Nexo PS8/10 and subs (LS400/600). The 8's are really small, but still pack a punch. I just heard them today and blew me out. I think they might do. A little expensive though

We'll see tomorrow

After a few months of changing options I got him the setup. He went really overboard. 1 Nexo RS15 sub and 4 PS15 tops. Extremely loud, expensive, but he's happy

Now I have my own set of problems... I want a band setup and I just saw the FBT Modus. What do you think about a Modus SubA and a Modus 40A on each side? They are heavy, active, but extremely powerful. In theory, the bass has 140 SPL and the tops 137, which is really powerful. What do you think of this setup, and what else can you recommend better in the same pricerange, preferably cheaper? Does it sound ok in a club/bar indoor setup, max. 300 people? If bought, it will probably be used in a top-over-sub configuration, like pictured in the link.
