PA Linking
      #999246 - 22/07/12 06:34 PM
Hey guys

Im about to do a gig for a band and theyve asked me if I can link my PA system up (JBL EON 515s and 518s) with their PA System (Mackie Actives).

Is it a good idea? Or will it just not work properly.. Im not entirely sure on the power ratings etc, they are both active systems though..

Cheers

Technically its easy, just link via XLR's if they are all powered units. However if you link the mackies from your tops (assuming you are using the crossover in your subs) you will end with too much mid tops. Going through the mackies then into your bins will allow the mackies to run full range.

If they have a pair of SRM 450's i wouldn't bother but if they are something more meaty like the HD line then you may benefit.

saying all that the purists would cringe at the thought of using different speakers in the same rig as your JBL's will behave slightly differently to the mackies causing some minor phasing issues.

if you find out exactly what they have that may prompt folk for a more definitive answer

hope that helps

Why do they want to do this? (Dave's already covered the important bases.)

They probably think, erroneously, that having two linked PAs will somehow make them twice as loud.

Thats exactly what it is Dave.

They think it'll be louder because of the addition of 2 tops and 2 subs.

I think Ive persuaded the band not to bother

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I suppose if you double the sound pressure (like if you have a speaker, and you ad the same one) than sound pressure level should raise only 6 dB. So you will just need a lot of power, but the result will not be as good as the band want (they not gonna be twice loud)

Worth doing if you need to cover a large area. But don't just lump them all together - put one set of speakers somewhere further forward, and delay the send to it appropriately (1ms per foot). Look up "Haas effect".

Nothing to stop you putting them up and not using them (apart from the effort needed). Most people will think the show's louder as there are more speakers there. And handy for extra coverage - I do outdoor gigs regularly and I used to think people decided to sit at the sides to get less noise. Can't imagine why, because obviously they sit there so they can moan about the PA not being loud enough. They must like people-watching; they're usually far enough round that the stage is completely out of sight to them.

I did consider placing them forward for more coverage, will look further into that

Thanks
