Help choosing the right mics
      #1001809 - 04/08/12 10:05 PM
Hello,
I'm relatively new to all this and need a bit of help. I'm looking for mics for two purposes: outdoor movie shooting, and voice over studio recording.
I have no idea what kind of mics I should take on a film shoot, but 416s are out of my league financially.

As for voice over mics, what would be advisable? A friend has two CM64 Schoeps (equivalent to current MK4s), but someone told me a large diafragm is preferable. What do you think? And how many mics do you use for recording narration, one or two? Would I be mistaken in getting a T.bone SCT2000 or something like that?

Thanks!

I'm of no help, sorry, but have the same question so would be interested in any replies.

Recordists for film/video use a range of mics for use depending on the circs and what exactly they're shooting. Typically they might have an on-camera mic, a mic on a boom and radio mic kits for some kinds of dialogue - assuming the mics are either OK in-shot or can be concealed. I'm assuming you're interested in mics in the first two of these categories. Have a look at what Rode Microphones have to offer good value for money and not too expensive. Bob Bickerton of this parish also rates the Beyer MCE-66 - a short-shotgun which appears on Ebay regularly and goes for c.£60.

Unless you have a room with excellent acoustics - probably treated - then this will cause you lots of issues. If your room is good then any LDC with an even response and that's reasonably quiet - look for self-noise figures below -20 dB (the more the better) - should be OK. Something from the Audio-Technica range may suit. Also check-out the Sennheiser MK-4.

If your room is bad, you'll need to think about a dynamic mic eg: Sennhesier 451, Shure SM7B, Rode Procaster, Electrovoice EV20/320.

Oh! and one mic per person and make sure you have mesh pop-screens at hand for use if necessary...

I suspect Mike intended to say Sennheiser 421 in his dynamic mic recommendations. Also the Heil PR40 has won much praise for this application. It's worth bearng in mind that voiceover recordings are way more exposed than singing to a raucous backing track - the more sensitive the mic, the more each flaw in the recording environment will be faithfully captured! Get a good, controlled room and a condenser mic, or failing that, a dynamic of the calibre suggested by Mike.
