Sonar 7 copying project settings between tracks
      #1003361 - 13/08/12 07:29 PM
I am in the process of mixing an EP and can't seem to be able to copy project track settings in Sonar 7 in a way that is consistent across the board. The result is that the drum levels are slightly off and some other annoying little things like this.
Any tips/suggestions?

Hi - do you mean copy between separate project files?

I have occasionally noticed an issue when ctl+dragging a plugin from one file to another it will lose its settings - so e.g. compressors revert to unity gain and a ratio of 1:1. Can't remember which version that was in, and come to think of it I jumped from 6 to 8 when they did a special offer... but anyway worth checking that.

[edit] Sorry I should learn to read... you do say 'between tracks'. I would do this by cloning the original track, untick 'Clone audio' or whatever it's called but leave the others ticked, then drag in the required audio.

[OT] I wish there was an easy way of setting up a 'project desk' i.e. as you would in the analogue world - set the channels and busses up then run your audio into them. Really handy if you've just recorded a set of tracks with identical instrumentation/mic'ing etc but you want to keep them in seperate project files. I know you can do it with copy/paste/save-as but the margin for error is high (with me anyway)..

I can save full chennel strips and apply them to the other project but the settings (volume levels, Sonar eq missing) are a mess. I guess I'll just have to live with it as it seems to be the standard for this program.
Kinda bummed out because applying project settings between Pro Tools and Cubase projects was so easy.

Hmm... maybe try the Cakewalk forum?

I've been there and was actually hoping I might have missed someone's idea, thus posting here. Looks like the only way is a combination of screenshots, writing on pieces of paper and importing channel by channel settings which get broken most of the time. I need to research Reaper or some other DAW in more detail

Have you tried saving as a template?

Yes - there are two options, full project template or track template.
Track templates don't take into account eq and only save the fx after the Cakewalk channel eq (which is incidentally one that I use the most). Somehow they also load buggy, I save one track per template and somehow was loading 2 more tracks next to it which I then had to manually delete every time I loaded one of these presets. Quite a pain but only way I found so far that kinda works. Incidentally Sonar doesn't export bus tracks or master channel tracks as presets, so these have to be copied manually.

Second option is full track templates but then I'll have to import all the audio with a common start up time which is a mess since it has no streamlined process, unlike say Pro Tools where it does it automatically.

Yes sort of, but if you have the audio you want to copy the settings to already in a project, I have done this by:

- Setting up the mix, making sure you have the same tracks in the same order as in the file you want to apply the settings to
- Saving as a project template
- Create a new project with the template
- Open the other project with the audio in it that you want to apply the settings to
- Select all (Ctrl-A)
- Copy (Ctrl-C, and tick any options like 'Markers' you want want to copy along with the audio clips)
- Switch to the new project you just set up from the template
- Select the first track in the project
- Paste (Ctrl-V)

Clunky but it does work.

Thanks - that might actually do the trick. I'll try it out.
