Duvet question...
      #1044099 - 19/04/13 02:21 PM
Ok, so reading this http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun06/articles/voxrecording.htm the recommendation is winter duvets doubled up to help deal with low end for a basic DIY vocal setup. My question is, just how effective would this really be? I understand they'll help to an extent, but is it worth getting a couple of bass traps to deal with the low end properly? Obviously, that is going to be a better solution, but what I mean is, would I get significantly better results doing this or would it be fairly marginal? Maybe I could just dump a couple of rolled up duvets in the corners to help with the bass...

At the moment I record acoustic guitar and vocals only. With acoustics guitars, a lot of the bottom end is going to be rolled off anyhow. I also have an instrument reflection filter from SE.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Duvet isn't going to do much for the bass end, that energy is heavy but it will help reflections, clap type echo which is what you want for vocal recording.

If you want a more permanent but cheap bass trap solution head down to your builders merchant and buy some of the Rock Wool rigid slabs, the thicker the better. Cover them in a fabric of your choice and put them across your corners with air gab behind. Job done.

Cheers guys. I'll look into making a couple of bass traps to go in the corners then. I might try and make do with a mattress or two for the time being

Bear in mind that most vocalists don't throw-out a huge amount of low end. Duvets work very well - I had a singer round yesterday for some overdubs and a sleeping bag on a mic stand took a couple of minutes to set-up and dried-up the sound perfectly adequately even without a filter behind the (cardioid)mic. Try it and listen to the results - do you actually hear anything that needs attention? Stick an agressive compressor on the recording and boost the make-up to exagerate how much room sound you've got if you need help to zone-in on what you're hearing.

Obviously bass traps are generally good but may not be very useful in the specific case you cite.
