New USB Breath Controller
      #1047503 - 10/05/13 09:33 AM
Hello,

I bumped into this new breath controller and am very tempted to buy one.

http://www.kvraudio.com/product/usb-midi-breath-controller-by-tecontrol
http://www.tecontrol.se/breathcontroller.html

I'd love to hear from anyone who has any experience with it. Is it really as good as it seems?

Many thanks

Hi Melody7, and welcome to the SOS Forums!

I think you can judge for yourself by watching the Torley YouTube demo they link to:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm-U44kNtmI&feature=youtu.be

Torley is well-respected, and that demo convinces me that this TEC device is worth having:

Nice tool. I'm still using a very 'well-loved' BC-1 for this kind of stuff. For the price this has got to worth a try.

I'm quite interested in this too.
I emailed the makers and was surprised to get a reply the following day.

For those interested it is audio class compliant so should work driverless on any OS in its default state. They know it works on linux debian 6 (squeeze) but it is not yet officially supported. The configuration application is also not yet available for Linux, but that is currently being worked on.

In my research before buying I also found this thread

Apparently it works out of the box on Korg Kronos which is a linux based synthesizer. Not useful for me but thought you might like to know.

I received my new TEControl breath controller yesterday and I am very pleased with my purchase.

I plugged the device straight out of the box into my computer and it was instantly recognized and I could start using it with the default settings (it sends Midi CC2 on Channel 1).

Initially I tried it in static mode (without the bleed valve delivered with it) and I found it ok if a bit temperamental. Then I installed the configuration software and connected the valve to achieve some flow as explained in the manual. After adjusting the sensitivity and the bleed to my liking I achieved an extremely sensitive and yet intuitive response that blew my mind and I feel I have only scratched the surface of what this thing can do.

To my amazement the device is also fast and responds well to tonguing, even flutter tonguing.

The configuration software has a minimalistic but immediate and functional user interface. It is small, fast and installation went like a breeze. I like that it is possible to store and retrieve settings easily. The settings are saved as small .tec files that can be double clicked from anywhere to be restored to the device. Once one is happy with them, the settings can also be saved in the device's non volatile memory so that they survive disconnection.

All in all I would highly recommend the breath controller!

You are welcome. By the way sorry for posting it twice but the browser froze. I managed to go back and not lose the message but I see that somehow, when the browser froze it had already gone through. Maybe one of the admins can remove the copy?

I should also add that I have just ordered the new headset with Yamaha BC3 style mouthpiece that is now on offer. I hope to get it by the time I come back from my overseas business trip next week.

Hi there, you haven't reported on the headset. I would be interested in your opinion.

Many thanks
Michael

Yes, sorry, I have been very busy with many other things.

I am very happy about the headset, it allows a more precise control of the airflow. I like that it is flexible so it can be shaped as one prefers. I would recommend it.

I have one, and I can confirm Melody7's opinion 100%. To add some further observations:

(1) the control applet lets you map input to MIDI output numbers very simply; you are not forced to accept 0->0 or 127->127, which is good for avoid premature triggering, and if (like me) you have many successful years of smoking to your credit, you can set the max output to correspond to a comfortable breath pressure. For intermediate values, the applet lets you easily set a variety of linear ramps and positive or negative splines, and the latest version lets you save all this as presets. Which means you can configure it for different sound generators, and recall your ideal performance settings instantly.

(2) the MIDI output really does output the full range 0-127 without gaps (unlike the note-on velocities of certain MIDI keyboards I could mention). This speaks for the quality of the implementation.

(3) it's difficult to assess (or even know how to technically ;-) the latency in the conversion, but I cannot detect any that might be an issue. Caveat: I am not a wind player. But I can say I found it far easier to use - and get good results - than trying to use an AKAI EWI USB as MIDI Expression controller generator.

(4) the tubing supplied with mine was black and somewhat tacky (literally), and seems to get covered in dust pretty quickly. I also have some slight reservation about the stability of the compound, and the possibility of it leaking into the dongle with adverse effects. I therefore detach the tubing when not using the controller.

(5) the 'moisture' issue (literally ;-) could be a problem if the USB port to which the dongle is connected is very much lower than the mouthpiece. In that situation, moisture could collect in the inevitable loop of tubing hanging at the inlet port of the dongle. Again, the solution is obvious. Use the bleed valve supplied, ensure the dongle is not significantly lower than the mouthpiece (USB extension cables of course work with this controller), and that the inlet on the dongle faces downwards.

Overall, the cavils are minor. OTOH the performance is excellent. One of my more successful purchases :-)

I just learned about a new breath controller made in Germany. It is quite expensive, made of luxury materials such as rare wood and stainless steel apparently.

I agree it's nice but look at how much it costs! 890 euro + shipping

Not sure they'll sell many at that price.
