Console Suggestions
      #313114 - 19/06/06 12:25 PM

Hey,

Last year, my fellow band member and I began to build a premises with the intention to create a small recording studio and tution space. Its come to the point in the build project where we need to decide upon the equipment.

We will only every be recording a maximum of 16 inputs into either a Pro Tools HD system or something based around Logic (yet to decide) but we still have a selection of outboard equipment to use.

What do people recommend for this sort of set up with a budget of around £3000 for the console?

Cheers

Obvious question : do you in fact need a console? You could do everything in the box and use a control surface, with outboard being added through the interface. It's an option anyway...

In the sort of price bracket that you are talking about, a quick look at Larkings or Gear Online shows that you could afford :

- Soundtracs Mega
- Soundtracs IL
- Soundcraft 6000
- Allen and Heath GS3000
- Soundcraft Ghost

All of which are good desks with the first three being older desks which mean that they are easier to service, but have a greater risk of going wrong.

The GS3000 has a few fans round these parts and the Ghost is considered to be about the first 'usable' desk by some pros that I know. They both can be automated to a degree (mutes) which is nice.

you could get a nice second hand console with that budget (wanna buy my TAC Scorpion... 24 channels, 16 buss to tape...? ?) but I have to agree with Dave: In your position I'd be asking myself if I really needed a desk for anything other than to look good in front of the punters...

Cheers for the suggestions. I was aware of the GL3000 and Soundcraft consoles as an option an I will look into these a little more.

With regards to actually needing a console, we decided that we wanted to give ourselves plenty of options with regards to recording and signal routing.

How would you go about setting up an in the box system, any particualar interfaces you'd recommend?

Thank you very much in advance

Adam

I would recommend buying a used console as you will get something that originally cost much more than £3000. As already mentioned the GS3000 is a good desk. I would also recommend checking out some of the other soundtracs consoles such as the solitaire or jade (though you may struggle to find a jade for around 3k). On these consoles you get a compressor and gate on every channel which is a useful bonus! Check out studiosystems.co.uk for used soundtracs consoles.
I personally prefer mixing through an analogue console with nice eq and nice outboard. You don't have to worry so much about maxing out your computer with loads of plugins and I find it sounds better (I'm still yet to find an eq plugin that sounds as good as a quality analogue eq).I also find it a quicker way to work but maybe that's just me .I also find it much easier for setting up headphone mixes for musicians.
The downside is you don't get total recall ,so if you want to slightly adjust something in the mix and the mix isn't still set up on the console your screwed. Consider how you wan't to work and what sort of work you will be doing, if total recall is important then you may be better off investing in a rack of nice preamps and a control surface. If digital summing concerns you then you could look into getting a summing box . If total recall isn't imortant get an analogue desk.
