I need some advice on cross synthesis. I am about to attempt to morph some sound effects
into instruments, i.e. a gas hob burner into a flute. I'm using Cubase 5 and have the
Native instruments Suite including the vocoder. Can anyone suggest any cross synthesis
techniques using my or any other software available for the PC.
Cheers,
Matt

Sounds like a job for Camel Audio's Alchemy!

Indeed it does Sam - Cameleon 5000 launched Camel Audio's excellent morphing capabilities
into the world (read Sam's review of it here www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr04/articles/cameleon5000.htm ), but
Alchemy takes morphing even further.
My review of it is here:

If you're made of money, you can always look into Symbolic Sounds Kyma.
It's
a sound designer's filthy perverted wet dream. I'd go as far as to say that there's
nothing out there that can do what it does. I lust after it ....

That, plus the Continuum Fingerboard ... geez, don't think I'll want to touch a
"normal" synth ever again. Do listen to some of the tau morph sound examples, even if
you're not made of money, which I suspect you aren't :

Ahhh,
I've always wondered what a granulated trombone-dog was!
Kyma is exactly what I want but unfortunatley out of my price bracket at the mo.

I think it's out of most people's price bracket.
Nevertheless, it's an awesome
bit of kit and definitely something worth looking at if you've got the means.

Fortunately cross synthesis can be done for free with Pure Data if you cannot afford

Pardon my ignorance, but what is this pure data you speak of ?

It's easy with a quick Google Darclinc
This is what I came up with, and it does indeed look
interesting:

Shot, Martin.
I'll check it out. If it can do Kyma-esque stuff I'm sold
already.

For sure it can.
But check also Reaktor or Max/MSP...

+1 for CDP, Reaktor and Max.
Good luck with the interfaces
Is there a morphing function within absynth v5? If not, you may
be able to create one.

Great Stuff, I tried out Alchemy and it didn't really give me a good enough result as I'm
morphing sound effects and need them to sound crystal clear. That said, I did spend a good
hour using the softsynth and I’m tempted to buy it regardless.
I have Reaktor
but haven’t looked into that yet but will check out Pure Data. I have used MaxMSP but
haven’t got the time on this projects to get my head around it again.
I
remember once using a non real-time spectral morphing programme at Uni but can't remember
what it was? I'm off to check out pure data.

Based on what I've read on the site, it looks like you need some kind of programming
background to use CDP. Is this right ?
I don't have any programming background,
so how difficult would it be to use for someone like me ?

If you buy it before next Monday you'll get it half price. I
posted info about the Group Buy here:

Buy it before next Monday ? I don't follow ...
I thought they'd let people know
of what discounts they get after the signup period has passed. I for one am interested in
Camelphat and Camelspace, as well as the free stuff I should get, already being a paid
customer.
Do I have to buy it before next Monday or what ? As a test I just put
Camelphat in my shopping cart and it only gives 20% off.
Confused ...

I havent used it for a few
years now but at the time it was a steep learning curve. A programming background is not
needed however and the guys that run it are real enthusiasts always willing to help.
Specral morphing, as I recall has a graphic interface these days so is a lot
easier

Exactly, but you
have to enter the product(s) you want in this page to qualify:

No,
you don't have to buy, but you do have to tick the boxes of the products you want on the
'Group Buy' page and provide your email address before next Monday. Here's a quote from
the Group Buy page that hopefully explains everything more clearly:
"You'd
better hurry if you want to participate - the Group Buy will end on Monday, November 16th.
Once the group buy is over or the maximum discount is reached, we will send out special
links from which you can purchase the products at the reduced price. You will then have
two weeks in which to purchase."
However, the maximum 50% discount has already
been reached, so I get the impression that these links are already starting to be given
out to some people.

Yeah, I got the links this morning. So, wasting no time whatsoever, I've already gone
ahead and bought Camelphat and Camelspace.
Eager to give them both a whirl this
evening !

Soundshaper is a good GUI for CDP. There are others, Sound Loom being a notable
addition. The interfaces are esoteric and reflect different ways of working. It used to be
that you had to separately analyse and resynthesise the soundfile, however it is
integrated in one process. I don't think you need a programming background for the simpler
processes or levels, but for advanced processing it certainly helps. Probably what is more
important is an understanding of the physics of sound.

Thanks again for all your advice. As I mentioned, I wasn't totally blown away by Alchemy's
re-synthesis section but the synth was amazing and I couldn't turn it down on the group
buy scheme. I Have also purchased CDP5 so I'll let you know how it sounds.

O.K,
Now here's the story.... I purchased CDP5 over a week ago and it was sent
out to me right away. Unfortunately royal mail decided to lose it in the post!?!?! When I
informed Archer@CDP he said that by complete coincidence
he was in my town yesterday (over 200 miles from where he lives) and would be happy to
come over, help install and give me an introductory lesson. Wow, what are the odds!
He was a very nice chap and guided me through the basics which would have taken me
a whole lot longer to learn, I’m sure. Though not having the sexiest user interface (it's
a command line programme that comes with a user interface design by one of its members)
It's all about the sound. Once I started playing around with non real-time processes I
begun to understand its power in sound manipulation.
Anyhow, I purchased it for
audio morphing duties and it did just that. I was very pleased with the results though it
still wasn't entirely the sound I was after, so I began processing the sounds further with
Amplitude Modulation and using the combine interleave functions. By then morphing these
processed samples together as a whole I finally reached the sound I was after. Considering
I used only three of the 400+ functions then I’ve got some late nights ahead of me!
Thanks Archer.

Hi Matt C,
Glad you got what you were after. I'm quite interested to hear the
results, care to post up an example of what you managed to morph ?

You beat me to it Darclinc - I was just about to suggest the same thing to Matt
I'm always interested in hearing the results of audio creation
software

They are very nice guys, and in my experience always willing to help, or make
suggestions.
In version 4, there was a great spectral transformation tool
(SPECTRANS??) that I had some excellent fun with. Not sure if it's in v.5, but definitely
worth a try if it is!

They are indeed nice chaps and already helped me in the past couple of days with questions
regarding the software. I can't post the creations i've made as it's still up in the air
with the client. I will however play around with a few more sounds and then post the
creations next week. I'm pretty busy with jobs at the mo so i'll keep you posted.
Thanks again to the SOS forum and its members,
Matt

yes I've got to agree also. When I got my first cdp package some years back I wasn't even
computer literate and Archer spent hours on the phone talking me through all the functions
and also found a contact locally who had it and showed me hands on. you never forget that
