Studio Monitors - Recommendations please!
      #802341 - 10/01/10 09:01 PM

I am currently looking at getting a pair of Walfdale Diamond Studio Pro 8's due to the positive reviews- are there any better options on the market?

There are hundreds of different options. "Better" is a subjective term that has little meaning without qualifications. What is the maximum amount of money you want to spend? What level of quality are you looking for? For some perspective: the Diamonds are (in my experience) respected entry level monitors that some people love a lot. But they are far from cutting edge in their specifications.

I think it's "Wharfedale", by the way.

Just about everything else in the same price range!! The Wharfedale's are extremely undetailed, fine for listening to your iPod, but as reference speakers they're not really that good.

Just checking your price range and assuming you want monitors rather than ear candy, why not take a look at the Yamaha HS50M (active, updated NS10s). http://www.playback-europe.com/yamaha-hs50m-9310.html

As pro's down the ages have said, if it sounds good on NS10s it'll sound good on anything.

Personally, I'd bite the bullet and go all out to triple my monitoring budget - selection of something you could live with for the rest of your life becomes far easier then* - (eg Dynaudio BM5a's etc)

* Well, so long as you never hear some ATC's, anyway ;-/

The HS series is not the updated NS10 as they would have you to believe. They are actually different designs. The NS10 is sealed enclosure, while the HS series is a ported design. That's a MAJOR difference. They don't sound the same. Though there are some similarities in the tone that each box gives.

I also wouldn't say that if something sounds good on NS10s then it will sound good anywhere. If that were true then there would really be no need for any other studio monitor at all. In reality, the NS10 has a good time domain response and being popular, many people are familiar with their sound. That being the case many people know how to work with NS10s. But monitoring technology has come a long way since the NS10 and there are several excellent choices available that would put them to shame easily.

Obviously one should pick what they like. But don't pick it because of the hype or popularity.

I've owned 3 sets of monitors. The first was NS10's which i liked alot. Next I owned Tannoy Reveals which were also great if not better. The third set were Berhinger truth which weren't quite so good. Out of these 3 I liked the Tannoys the best. I'm now using my back up speakers until funds allow me to purchase a new pair, These are Yamahas as well and like a lower powered but heavier built Ns10. I'm sticking with passive monitors myself as I have good speaker cable and a nice amp. I also like using the tape returns on the mixer to overdub and it helps having a headphone input on the amp for this purpose. Out of all the speakers I've had i liked the Tannoys the best so i'm probably gonna pick up another pair soon. My advice to you would be try and get to a shop to check out how whats avaiable sound or a friends house to give you some perspective. Most studios now use powered monitors but I wouldn't say Passives are that inferior.

Over the last 5 years I've owned quite a few different monitors:

Blue Sky Media Desk
Tannoy Reveal 5a
Tannoy Precision 6D
Genelec 8020a
and currently Genelec 8030a pair

All of them were very good and even the budget Reveal 5a pair. The precision 6d's were excellent but quite big and bulky but despite the size, not a very strong low end.

I love the Genelec's. Not cheap unfortunately but I love the compact size and decent bass.

If you can get GENELEC, then just go and get one of those. But if you're on a budget, you have to go into the store and listen yourself, because they need to work for your ears, plus your accoustic setup. But I'm using KRK Rokit 8 G2 and the Sub, and it works for me.

And if you were not able to have monitors, due to a very complex room + need to keep it quiet + difficulties to ship overseas heavy monitors. Would you go for some cans as the AKG 701? and then compare (when you can) with some old speakers/ ipod until you get used to it?

I'd strongly suggest that you look at the used market. Speakers either work or they don't so (unless you are dealing with a dishonest or deaf seller) there isn't too much risk in buying used and you will save quite a bit of money.

Cheers

James.
