RME Fireface 800 or Presonus Firestudio lightpipe + Apogee Mini-DAC? HELP!!!
      #808800 - 02/02/10 06:21 PM

Hi all, really need help with this. I will TRY to keep this simple, but here goes.
I need a new interface, i don't really need analogue I/O's, i use a lot of ADAT optical connections, 16 I/O's as on the RME would be enough to get by, but the 32 on the Presonus would be advantageous. The problem is this. Audio quality is everything to me!!! RME's audio quality is renowned, no problem there, but, i would not use the DAC on the presonus, i would use an Apogee mini-dac for that, however if i want to go down the Presonus + Apogee route, would using the Presonus simply as a digital I/O box, impair the audio quality in terms of inferior jitter suppression the RME is outstanding at. Hope that is understandable. Thanks in advance for any input.

Iv'e also just this second found out about the M'Audio ProFire Lightbridge, which is cheaper which is good, but the same question applies, if not using either the ProFire or the Presonus for DAC duties, will their inferior data handling effect audio quality??????

P.S. This driving me nuts

As long as you keep the signal within the digital domain, clock jitter is of no concern. It can affect audio only during AD-DA conversions.

Aha! great info on the jitter thing, if thats the case, i guess the only issue is RME ff800 for DAC duties vs Apogee mini dac

Are you restricted to a firewire interface? The RME digiface may offer a better solution here if you want more digital options.

I own a Fireface btw and used to have an Apogee Mini-Me. As far as conversion (albeit AD in this case) is concerned, they were pretty close in my opinion. Different yes, but more a subjective preference decision and not, this one is better than that one. They are both 2 good sounding DACs. I kept the Fireface over the Apogee primarily because of the reliabilty and lack of hassle with using it with whatever computer. It has yet to fail me in any way. I could not say the same for the Apogee. When it worked it was great but it wasn't hassle free. If you're just using it as a DAC and not an interface of course, this won't be an issue.

Just to possibly confuse you further, I actually use a Lavry DA10 DAC with the Fireface which I find to be far more revealing and open than the Fireface DAC (and it also has a volume control which I still find the most irritating omission on the Fireface.

Yes i am restricted to firewire, wanted soo badly to run a digiface but can't coz of the stupid PCI thingy : (

Thanks for attempting to confuse me : ) but have to keep this within £1200 if poss... i think i will go for the RME, unless anyone comes up with another solution, i really would LOVE to have at least 24 ADAT I/O's but if it's either going to cost too much or compromise audio quailty in any way i'm not interested...

I don't think you will be disappointed with the Fireface and you can always add more channels later when you have the cash available.

Add more ADAT channels? How?

One way is to daisy chain another fireface. If you are using firewire 800, I believe you can chain 3 devices. If you are using 400, you might need to disable certain channels to conserve bandwidth to get all your required ADAT channels working.
