How do I get the best sound for Iphone video

Hi I'm looking to record some live videos for you tube, im finding that the in built mic
is not up for the job. What are my alternatives ? I've had a quick look about and noticed
that tascam do a microphone, ideally I would like to use my sequencer as I would have all
the options I need, but then how does one go about syncing it with video ? Would
appreciate any ideas..

Using digital recording
systems for both picture and sound, it's generally easy to align both in a video editor
even if the recordings were not synchronised.
I wonder if your problem is
really the iPhone mic, or if you're putting a single mic in front of an amplified gig and
not getting the sound you expect? What are the actual problems with the results you're
getting?

I'm not
sure what you mean. Are you wondering about upgrading via a Tascam iPhone mic, but
thinking you'd ideally prefer to record the sound separately into a computer instead...?
Could you feed the signal into the iPhone via a line-in for recording alongside the
video...? Otherwise you'd just have to sync them up manually. Any decent DAW should
include a video track. You could use something like a clapperboard to create some clear
audio/visual sync points.
A/V sync drift can be a PITA with longer clips if
you record video and audio on separate devices without syncing them...you might end up
having to split the audio track in several places and move stuff around until it fits. Lip
sync can be pretty tricky. PluralEyes is a popular tool for doing it automatically.

Ok just to clarify, I want to record a few classical guitar studies using my iphone 4s as
thats the only means for recording video that I have, also its pretty good, but I would
like to record audio via a sequencer as I have far greater control over the sound also
using my own seperate mics would be miles better than the inbuilt mic on the phone.
However I have never done any video editing and don't want it to be a major operation,
want to keep things simple if I can..

...this kinda video editing is as simple (to me) as lining up 2 separatley recorded audio
tracks you just look for the match (the sync of the strum on video to the sound
of the strum on audio from your daw) as long as you have a decent (logic/cubase
etc etc) DAW you should be quite happy (It gets immensely more trickier
when using multiple camera's/shots/close-ups etc - but if you have iMovie/Final Cut/Adobe
premier etc - it is still kinda like the same process as aligning audio tracks - just more
of them! - and I've found final cut to be a moderatly easy learning curve for simple stuff
because I'm used to Logic and the way DAW's work)

I'm just wondering if you could avoid the problems associated with A/V sync drift and save
yourself some work by taking a line into the iPhone from whatever equipment you're using
to record the audio, via an adapter if necessary, so you're capturing them together. I'm
not entirely sure.

Thats what I was hoping not
sure, if I could output from preamp to iphone or soundcard to iphone, what I really wanted
to do was ad a splash of reverb, but then i think that it probably starts getting tricky ?

If you want a
simple, free video editor, I recently came across a recommendation for AVi Demux. Haven't
tried it though.

(...actually I guess it would probably be easier with an iPhone app. Don't know much about
iPhones.)

Sounds good. I like the row of coffins in
the background!
There must be plenty of iPhone apps capable of a bit of
simple video editing. How about writing an ending though? Fadeouts are such a
cop-out!
Is the "old movie" effect something offered by your recording
program? I usually hate that sort of gimmick, but it actually suits this song quite well.

I just
ran the output of the soundcard into a Peavey ampkit link, there are several different
types irig etc just a little box that allows a 1/4 inch jack which has a phono output that
goes direct into the iphone..

Guys, would really appreciate your views on how I could improve on the sound for doing
some recordings similar to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klTDzvH6Pw4&feature=plcp This was
my first attempt and I would like to know, other than my playing, what are the obvious
flaws with this recording ?

There's some useful background in this SOS article. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug01/articles/recacgtr0801.aspWhat mic(s) are you using, and how do you have things set up...?

The only mics I have are Rode NT1 - Rode NT3 - SM58 Was using the NT1 for this, at about
1ft away going into a focusrite trackmaster pre, with a tiny bit of compression. Never had
much joy with the NT3 and never think to use the sm58. I think the room reflections are
quite obvious ?

There are several other versions of the Tarrega Study in E Minor on YouTube. If you pick
out one that has a sound you like, we could suggest how you might get that sound.
Your guitar seems to be tuned a semitone flat. Bringing it up to pitch would brighten
the sound.

Not quite as easy as that, as it's a
classical piece, many of the versions are played on a classical guitar, mine is obviously
steel strung. I'm just trying to get a feel for what all the ppl here think when they hear
it, like I say, what it lacks etc.
But as you point out it can be a good idea
to know what your aiming for, so i suppose if I could get a sound aproaching the links
below I would be more than happy and inspired to do more.

It doesn't "lack" anything, but other sounds are possible!
Don't worry about
the different guitars being used, but tell us one of the YouTubes of the SAME piece of
music that you like.
