Achieving this 'stutter' vocal effect?

www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgOcV0O7k48On the chorus. 'Frie e
e end'. I know this could be achieved with hardware (example = turntables) but I want to
carry it out in a digital setting. Thanks

Musicrow vinyl boy
I used to use this a year or
two ago and it works well for scratching but not for the kind of effect I'm after.

Sounds to me like the level is attenuated using a square wave LFO controlling the
amplitude, giving a sharp cut up sound. You might have a plug in that does this, Cubase
had the Chopper plug in, but you might achieve it with a tremolo/vibrato or a gate with a
side chain triggered from a pre fade percussive sound (if you don't want to here the
effecting sound that is). These gives an idea of how it can be done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUoPzMzhT64http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ux7qb5e98k

The stutter of "frie-e-e-end" is on different notes. It sounded to me like he basically
sung it that way and it was then "stuttered" by chopping out a section either side of each
note. (Maybe he even did the "stutter" for real and it was just exaggerated.)
(In general, I thought the "stutter edit" was often done with manual cut/copy/paste in a
DAW, BT-style, though there are plugins like Izotope's Stutter Edit that can automate it.)

just sounds totally like a volume edit using automation. Go into your sequencer and just
automate the volume but make sure you have square edges on all the fade up and downs so
you get a choppy effect. You could also try automating a Tremolo with a square
wave effect and get pretty close i reckon

use 'slice to midi' -very quick and very easy in ableton -or cut up the audio manually -or
yes, use stutter edit or effectrix
