Hello every body
Since the +24dbu is a big gain that is available on Lynx
Aurora16-VT interfaces, I'm really eager to know if it is a better idea to add this gain
and subtract some gain on mic pres? I have an Auorora8 and an SSL X-Rack and use its
dedicated mic pres that are very quality. Do you think an upgrade to Aurora16-VT is
reasonable due to what I mentioned?
Thanks.

No, calibrate the trims according to a sensible reference level. They're there to allow
you to adjust your headroom, not to artificially bump up your pres. Unless you're
recording a very quiet source with a very noisy mic pre, and this approach will allow you
a quieter level of gain, it's not a great way to go, because when you then want to record
a line level source for example, it will come up relatively hot. Interfacing back to
analogue gear could take you beyond the sweetspot. I'd say that 0dBVU=-16dBfs is about as
hot as you'd really want to be for most music production, tracking and mixing. J

But since I switched my current aurora8 from -10dbv to +4dbu I felt that everything is
better and performers really acted better. I guess there might be a dynamic non-linearity
and the signal is kind of compressed! or I can easily say that I can't justify what
happens here. can you?

Well yeah, you've changed the sensitivity from consumer level to professional level. You'd
have to provide a higher level at the mic amp for the same level in digital when using
professional level. The difference is about 12dB I think. This should be set according to
the equipment with which you're interfacing but it will usually be +4dBu. J
