Not the kind associated with my advancing years. A couple of years back I bought a PC
(Packard Bell) (I know not the best), as a dedicated music computer.
At the
time 2gbRAM seemed more than enough for my needs. Now with Cubase 5 loaded and BFD2 (kits
around 450mb) a few plugs and not a great deal of tracks (mostly guitar) I am now running
out of memory and Cubase just shuts down, looking at the usage I am showing approx 1.35gb
used from 2 gb, and unfortunately the machine has a 2gb max that can be installed. In BFD2
I have tried using the 16 bit mode but like the 24 bit better.
So without
buying another PC (6 already in house) can I use my other PC loaded with BFD2, which is
used for all the domestic stuff like, Word, Excel, Banking, etc to take the load, and
connect the two via SPDIF. The music PC uses Saffire Pro 40 and the domestic has a Delta
66 card installed and 3gb RAM.

You CAN use a second computer as a host for virtual instruments and bring its output back
into the mix. But you'll go mad. Bite the bullet and get a new machine running 64-bit
Windows 7 with at least 4GB RAM (but 8GB won't cost much more). It's the tool for the job
these days (as you've discovered:-)
Alternatively, you shouldn't have too much
trouble picking up someone's throw-out Windows XP machine with a motherboard that WILL
take 4GB RAM. You can limp along on that for a bit.

Thanks for that Wombat, I will try the link first and chance the mental breakdown. I did
look at buying a base unit with 8gb but have a thing about using XP and then found out XP
can only "see" 4gb. So it is inevitable that I will have to go the 64bit way some day if
only for that luverly 8gb.....(I do have a Win7 Laptop) so know the Operating sys
reasonbly well.

Well, if the computers are lying around handy, there's no argument against giving it a
try!
A few years ago I kept a computer running just for hosting GigaSampler
(it ran Windows ME). They were useful sounds - but time moves on and I came to realise
they weren't THAT useful, and certainly weren't irreplacable. I hung on to a lot of
outboard gear well past its sell-by date too. It's easy to fall in love with old
equipment and old ways!
When tempted to worship some piece of antique
technology I go to my REAL instruments and remind myself of what they're trying to imitate
:-)
