Graphics Cards

Hi,

The graphics card in my 1st Gen Mac Pro has died. I know what cards are compatible. Can I use any compatible card or do I have to get a Mac specific card?

I believe the card needs to be a 'mac compatible' version. I've heard you can flash some PC GPU's to work in Macs but I don't know much about it. I'd stick to something mac compatible.

I have a PC version of a ATI 5870 in my Mac Pro 3.1 under snow leopard running fine without flashing it and no additional drivers...

Seems PC cards are starting to work more in OS X, Lion is able to run a few more cards. However, ou don't get a boot screen unless you flash them so keep your old card incase.

One thing to aware of is that certain software packages, such as Final Cut X, require cards from a list of those available.
Your original card (for example) is not on the list.

Also, the minute you mention "Mac", the price suddenly doubles.
