Flash drive for production and Mac Pro questions
      #1031290 - 31/01/13 12:53 AM
Has anyone here tried an ssd drive for music production? Pro's, con's? I'm thinking of either upgrading to ssd or either getting more ram. Not sure which would be the better option. When building my computer, I went with the 7200 rpm sata with a tb storage. If I went with the ssd, the 512 GB would be the most I could afford.

I'm at 12 GB of RAM right now and have had some crashes from Pro Tools 8 LE with a "DAE 720 error." Apparently its already using up most of the computer's resources. I'm using a Mac Pro with OS X Mountain Lion. Can anyone help with this?

I have a 128Gb SSD in my Mac Pro for the OS and applications. I then use a another internal drive to record to and for general files (a 2TB drive, not sure what speed etc) and I've never had any issues with bottlenecks. I use 8Gb of RAM in 32 bit.

I don't think RAM will be your issue. PT is still only 32bit so can't address more than 4GB of RAM anyway. Unless you are running an external hosting app like Vienna Ensemble in 64 bit mode, you won't gain any performance with more RAM.

Using an SSD as the boot drive will give you a fast boot and initial load times for apps will be a lot quicker but that's about it. Having said that I use a 256Gb SSD in my Macbook and have replaced the DVD drive with the original 750Gb internal drive. Both work very well.
