It depends what you want.

A proper controller is miles apart from a generic fader box. For hassle free use and no config, I recommend a Mackie Control.

However, if you have a capable MIDI hardware controller, you can use it with LC Xmu to emulate a Mackie Control - my little Korg microKontrol works with LC Xmu brilliantly...

i just midi or usb controlled faders.....midi keyboards are dirt cheap....so im confused as to why there are no fader controls....
purely midi no audio interface...
i no there's the beghringer but apart from that and the mackie control there's not much......
and these are both 8 faders.....

I have been thinking about the Euphonix Transport for this. I don't absolutely need faders, but it seems like the functionality built into the thing will make it very useful for editing..

Otherwise, I have heard the Mackie is fantastic as well. I would go Mackie over Euphonix if I was going for faders as well...

im just a bit confused......
i mean i could pick up a 24 channel mackie audio mixing desk for less then £1000

so why no purely 24 channel motorized faders desks???.....

are motorized faders that much more expensive then 24 channels of
analogue audio and eq????

Sure, but it doesn't control Logic...

And yes, motorised faders are expensive.

As mentioned before, it depends on your requirements and available budget. I'm using a BCF2000 from Behringer now for some years and it works like a charm. Standard it emulates a Mackie Control. However it is easy to program in Logic. Best of all: in my opinion nothing can beat it's price tag, given that it has motorised faders!

No...

A couple of MC Mixes working fine with Logic here.

Euphonix Artists need Logic PRO ... not Express. Someone was caught out with that a while back....

I hadn't seen the Icon Qcon before this thread. Looks very cool - a Mackie control type box for half the price. Nice. And would look very nice with my Mac keyboard/mouse. Cool. And would work with both Logic and Cubase. Excellent.

May have to order one! Anyone tried it ?

Yeugh, that Qcon is *fugly*...

I do wish Mackie would wise up and create a few derivatives of the Mackie Control - like a one fader version, a small footprint Euphonix-type version etc. The software's and tech is already done, it's just a new case design...

I have used an M-Audio Project Mix for a few years now and absolutely love it!
As it has 8 jack/XLR inputs I can leave all my old analogue synths connected to it and use it like a standard mixer, but when I fire up Logic it becomes a new beast entirely.
It sort of takes the 'digital' bit out of the recording process & operates just like an analogue unit would.
The 100mm motorised faders really are superb too and its much more natural to mix with faders than a mouse, so I would unreservedly recommend one - a cracking piece of kit!

The Presonus Faderport looks like a potentially good low budget control surface (providing you can cope with just one motorised fader of course).

Just looking at ebay, the price for a used Mackie Control is now under £300. The MCU Pro goes for than twice that second hand. I think very highly of my Pro, but if I was buying again I'd be very tempted to save my money and get a second hand MCU.

I wouldn't .... I've followed the threads over the years of those units which have worn out. IIRC, the built quality can be quite variable on the original units.

So far I can only find DV who claim to be able to get a Qcon. Not even Thomann have them listed! I might go for a punt on one next month (not enough time this month) ..

Question for Jazzie - A mate has a Project Mix that I could get me hands on possibly - what are they like in terms of tweaking plug-ins - is it quite intuitive? Do you have to map everything or there templates available etc? I have a Euphonix (Avid, whatever) MC Mix - is it basically the same sort of functionality as that?

Thanks in advance

I have to admit, I don't actually know. I don't use it to tweak plugins (that's the bit I do use the mouse for). However for mixing audio and monitoring its fab - love it!
Speak to your friend and see if you can try it out for a couple of days and I'm sure you'll go for it. Right now they can be picked up 2nd hand really cheap (£350-£500), which is an absolute steal IMO, especially considering the audio interface options too.
Hope this helps

I like the Artist Mixes for mixing. They can also edit plugins, but they simply lay out ALL of a plugin's parameters, in sequential order of parameter ID. AFAICS, there is (currently) no control over which controls appear, in what order.

So I use Novation Nocturn for plugin / softsynth editing - which gives that flexibility (and has templates, should you really want them).

Sorry I don't know anything about project mix, and am not Jazzie.

I've just started looking around for a controller, and was thinking along the lines of a Mackie Control (possibly with expander) and a C4. I've just found that the C4 is discontinued, what's replaced it?

Of course there's the SSL but thats a little dear.....

Avid Artist Mixes (was Euphonix MC Mix) can be had on eBay for almost reasonable prices.

I've recently picked up both the Artist Control and Mix units. Very nice. But, looking at the Eucon control software, I could quite happily live with the Mix and Transport like Chris - you can programme every button on that Transport and that's a lot of button presses!
