what to do
      #993401 - 18/06/12 02:58 PM
I am one of the many people caught out by Apple last week.
As I run a very old but very hard working G5 dual core at the moment I have been waiting for a year to upgrade.
Obviously disappointed on hearing last weeks non news I am in a quandary that I think I know the answer to but need a little friendly reassurance.
Should I buy the 8 core 2.4 or wait?
I cannot buy a mac book as it would cost me to much to change all my drives, plugins (I run UAD) etc and I really cannot wait anymore.
The 8 core will allow me to pretty much just transfer and carry on.
I realise I am being pathetic but my brain is hurting and I think I may cry.
Any kind words would be very much appreciated.

The choice seems to be a Quad and a Twelve core, rather than 8
Make sure the OS it's running and it's connectivity will be OK with your gear

The 8 core is the older June 2010 model and comes out well in tests (apparently) against others when using Logic and I am not sure that the new Quad is a fast. The 12 is unfortunately out of my price range.

If it helps you decide- I have the 2008 version of the MacPro 8 core, and to runs Logic 9 with no problem at all.

Any recent Mac Pro will be a beast and run Logic just fine. Even my "old" 8-core Xeon machine is brilliantly fast, quiet and flexible. I doubt I will consider getting a replacement for another 5, perhaps 10 years.

Why not buy a refurbished machine. Simply stick in plenty of RAM and an SSD for the OS, and Bob's your uncle.

Couldn't agree more - put the money you save towards any software updates you need and some new toys

Thanks for the info chaps. I am going refurb. Found something £700 cheaper and hopefully faster.
Now, how many pints of Guinness are there in £700?

Cheers.
