Learning HTML. You already know what happens with Text Edit. Anything saved as
txt OR html still opens they way it would appear in a browser when opening in TextEdit.
The TextEdit preferences:
They seem to be set correctly.
Open and Save: Ignore rich text commands in HTML files ...........................................in RSS files
New Document: Plain Plain Text
I using 10.6.8 and TextEdit 1.6
Suggestions?
Again, whether saved as html or txt files they still open in TextEdit as if in a
browser. Thanks!

I don't understand it. With the suffix htm or html I can write in TextEdit, open
things in a browser-everything appears as it should. I open it again in TextEdit, I
get the text. I can make changes. I can do this three or four times. Then
inexplicably, the next time it opens in TextEdit it appears as it would in a Browser, and
thereafter any more HTML writing is gone. The only thing that's happening is the same
file is opened repeatedly in a browser and repeatedly in TextEdit.

The problem seems to have solved itself. Did some utility disk housekeeping, and
resets of preferences, and it's working consistently. I wouldn't hazard a guess on
the cause nor the solution to the problem.

Do yourself a favour: don't use TextEdit.
A good text editor is a beautiful
thing. If you can't stretch to BBEdit or TextMate, then grab the free lite version of
BBEdit:

I've recently started to use a nice code editor called Sublime Text 2 - I think
they're still working on it, but at the moment it's free to use and if you like it - it's
not that expensive to buy. The one downside is that it doesn't have code
hinting built in at the monent which means it's not going to help you by giving hints. It's worth a look even just for the nice colour schemes
