Bias Peak ceases trading

Sorry if this is a re-post but it did not show up in a forum search, unless I was looking in the wrong place, but Bias-inc (Bias Peak) has ceased trading:

Aw... That makes me sad. I cut my teeth with computer recording on Deck II (annother Bias product, albeit acquired) back in the day. It was remarkably good at staying synced up to MIDI, way less hassle than tape, and a pretty decent track count (without additional hardware) on mid-spec macs - definitely way ahead of its time.

..my 2c - companies should not rest on their past successes .. the game keeps getting tougher, and ones that lack strategy get left behind...

On a side note existing users can cross-grade to Steinberg Wavelab - IMHO the best audio editor around...

After doing nothing, Bias:

1. Released grossly inferior products (SoundSoap pro and more)

2. Released products that had a GUI 20 years old (SoundSoap pro)

******3. Released an expensive multi-track product that had no multi-track capability when released!!!!!! Which was a signature feature of their new product---truly, this boggles the imagination!******

4. Continued to release Lite products that were crippled beyond useability, and crippled in such a way that the product's shortcomings were "rubbed in" at every opportunity. The Lite products were no more than frustrating paid advertisements. "Attention Shoppers: You can now use more than one plugin at a time!"

5. Continued their "worst! attitude! ever!" (quote: Comic Book Man) customer service policy. I found that the only way to get anything addressed was to call on a weekend and hope someone would pick up the phone who wasn't supposed to be doing that! It worked. I would get the guy who did the VO's for their videos. He was the ONLY person of any use, and even he was forthright in stating that he didn't know what was coming-or if anything was ever coming-in their "new" multi-track product. They did seem to get that out the door, finally.

I'm amazed they lasted as long as they did.

Strangely, I am a little regretful to see them go.

Their corporate attitude was cancerous, and it pervaded everything they did (or more aptly, all they never did).

Not surprising they're going. But still, too bad, I wish they would have become a better company. But people (customers) had moved on. And now, thankfully so.

To add to Jeraldo`s post, possibly the worst and ugliest audio software I ever tried ("Arkaos VJ midi" holds undisputed 1 place as ugliest and most retarded software of all times, with the worst support and sales based on features that never seen the light of day)

Sad really but not surprising. You just have to compare Sound Soap to Ceder DNS systems or X Noise and it is amazing that they where asking so much money for it.

Same with Peak. The program had a few nice features but not as good as Wavelab and more money. I think they only survived because of the lack of a good stereo editor on the Mac for so long.

They also bought the Deck app, that they never really improved on.

You could have been a contender, kid!

I think its a shame - they needed to revamp their products about 2 years ago and bundle in some of the older plugs - that would have kept people interested. The useability was somethimes a bit debateable, and they didn't listen to their customer base. They weren't far off havning a great product though. It was the only game in town for macs for a long while. I now need to think of a replacement if i want future support.

For the benefit of others like me who hadn't visited some other forums and newspaper sites-

The CEO of BIAS, Steve Berkley, blamed the demise on "the conduct of certain employees [which] resulted in disruptive interpersonal relationships." Apparently this conduct had to do with personnel involved in marketing the products.

Jason Davies, VP of Business Development, who is now running for political office and has founded a company which markets a few software and hardware audio products and also provides development and PR services for other businesses, stated that "the market dried up." And that users were "doing their work in the environment of other products, such as Pro Tools."

BIAS at one time employed about 20 employees, during the last year or so they were down to ten employees working from their homes after having given up an office.

Mr. Berkley has hinted that the products might have a future.

I wasn't aware that the multi-track version of the most recent product was never supplied to those who had paid for it. I had thought that it was released long after promised.

Corrections to any of this are welcome!

It would be great for improved products with improved value to continue with an improved company. Still, it will be difficult to earn or renew customers' confidence.

The Deck application, though very old, was still a current offering for sale- though not supported for past nor current customers! That's what I was told in a telephone inquiry a couple of months before the firm ceased operations.
