SSD Question

I know people say that SSDs shouldnt be used for recording etc. But how about someone who
most works with software instruments and doesnt record a great deal of audio? I understand
it would speed things up greatly for sample playback etc. So the only things that would
write to the disk would be projects and the odd bounced track...

They work fine for recording. Very well in
fact. They just cost more.

Actually someone mentioned this to me on another forum also, but couldn't back up the
claim. I wondered where this came from seeing as I've yet to see any evidence?

Evidence that ssd drives load quicker is not
in short supply. They load things much, much faster. How much exactly depends on which
model you choose and what hard drive you are comparing it to. In my experience it's a
night and day difference and I could never go back to running a system drive on a
mechanical drive again.
Scrolling through huge sample libraries is so quick
and smooth on a ssd. You won't ever go back.

They are also a lot quieter, so hence very good for recording. And much better for
samples. Now that I have an SSD for my audio laptop, my wife's laptop drives me
nuts with it's constant whirring....

Sorry I don't think I made myself clear - I meant the comment
about SSD's not being good for music. This was suggested to me without any proof but I
wonder where that viewpoint came from?
I'm in agreement that SSD's are very
exciting things to purchase for your system!

I think some of the early
ssd drives had problems with stuttering and a few teething troubles, so maybe it comes
from this. It's best to get a good brand - intel, Samsung, crucial etc..

I put a SSD as a second drive in my laptop last night (removed the DVD drive) and wow it
loads sample libraries so much quicker (I use NI and Spectrasonics libraries amongst
others). I use my laptop for live playing and moving between some songs seemed to take an
age (even on an i7 with 8gb RAM) which is a bugger when you start the next song!
One question - Does using an SSD is this way increase CPU load? I ask as I had an
alchemy patch loaded which used to play fine when streamed from an external USB drive. Now
I have it on the SSD the cpu meter has gone through the roof and it clicks and pops. I
went through power management settings and noted that when plugged in it had the lowest
CPU usage as 5%. Whacked this up to 100% and its reduced CPU load by over 70%. Will this
shorten the life of the CPU?

What power management setting is that
? Where exactly is it ?
I'm not sure my laptop has that.
