Tiger on Intel
      #999471 - 24/07/12 07:25 AM
I want to upgrade my PowerMac G4, but am limited to Tiger because of drivers for my hardware - in this case a Presonus vFire (Roland RBus to firewire converter). What is the most modern Mac iMac or Mac Pro that I can use with 10.4.11?
Thanks Mac.

Hi Mac.Dyson

Welcome to the forum.

Firstly have you tried your existing system on 10.5 leopard which is the highest OS you can run a PPC ?

it looks to me like you may be able to use the drivers with early versions of 10.5 see this thread:-

web page

If I remember correctly, all the white intel iMacs shipped with an intel only version of tiger 10.4 and the first batch of silver iMacs shipped with 10.5

hope this helps

Have a look at everymac.com as they list what OS X different machines can run.

I've had a quick look and the early Mac Pros run Tiger.

this isn't what the poster wants to know, he wants a new computer but then wants to install Tiger on to it. Right?

He's asking if the newer models can run the old OSX.

Presumably the early Intel models (those released during 2006 and first half of 2007) will run 10.4

Machines released after 10.5 came out (October 2007) will not run 10.4.

I agree with Jumpey - if there's any chance of running 10.5 then that would be good, and hopefully means you can buy a somewhat newer model, as long as it was released before August 2009 (when 10.6 came out).

No current Mac model will run any OS that old.

Thanks guys! Lots of responses and quickly - yeh!
'Officially' the vFire driver is only supposed to be supported till 10.4.11, but I guess there might be some overlap into 10.5 at least initially. The post mentioned by Jumpeyspyder is the first I've heard of it. Not sure I will take the risk - after taking a nosey at everymac.com (very useful site, thanks GlynGoll) a first generation (2006) Mac Pro seems the best bet. Perhaps not the last word in speed but enough for me as I am mainly hardware based, and it will still be (hopefully) a big jump up from my G4 dual 1.25.
Thanks again everyone - eBay here I come. Mac
