Asio problems at 96khz (Nebula)

Hi.

Running at 96khz I'm only managing to get about 13 instances of Nebula before my Asio gives out (even at 4096). Bearing in mind we're only talking demos of third party stuff which I'm using to help me decide which to buy (so quality reduced, no reverbs etc.). Is this an average for my system (see below) or is it improvable?

I'm running Nebula 32 bit in Cubase 5 32 bit, with an RME Babyface. I know I should prob move everything up to 64 bit, but it's a case of, well, everything WORKS at the moment (everything else anyhow)

These are my system specs -

Mainboard: Asus P6X58D-E
Chipset: Intel X58
Processor: Intel Core i7 960 @ 3200 MHz
Memory: 12288 MB (3 x 4096 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 210
Hard Disk: Western Digital WD800AAJS-22L7A0 ATA Device (80GB)
Hard Disk: Seagate ST325062 (250GB)
OS: Windows 7 Professional Professional Media Center (64-bit)

I would gamble good money on you not needing to work at 96kHz.
44.1 or 48 for games etc will do. It's actually the bitrate that matters for quality.
If you say you can hear the difference I will ask you if you are a pedigree and what sort of speakers you use in your kennel.

The rest of us are mongrels.

System specs look fine.
But. Check out that Media Centre version in google as I do seem to remember some problems with that. A while ago though so it might be fixed.
I've just looked up Nebula and think, from the SoS review, that you may be rather lucky.
Also of late some soundcard drivers seem to be having wobblies at anything over 1026. Don't know if it's a Windows issue but seems to be around since W7 arrived. Emus mainly but I have noticed others in passing.

I guess the idea is to improve the latency.

Yeah, Nebula is apparently optimised for 96khz. Doing some 'digging' I think the problems might be related to working with 32 bit Cubase/Nebula so I'm going to see what happens at 64 bit...

Thanks for posting that link to my Nebula Pro 3.5 review above

@russianpolecat: I don't think it's as much that Nebula is optimised for 96kHz as that fact that many of the latest and most intriguing 3rd party Nebula libraries are captured at 96kHz and often reveal subtle improvements when working with that sample than at 44.1/48kHz, just as many plug-ins do (particularly some character EQ and compressors) if you switch on their oversampling modes.

Unfortunately Nebula doesn't offer an oversampling option, and given its rapacious CPU consumption I'm not surprised – a single instance of some Nebula presets can cripple a dual-core PC just a few years old at 96kHz, and x2 oversampling at 48kHz would consume a similar amount

Yes, it does seem that this is the case. What about 192khz then? There are some libraries that are sampled at those rates. Surely that is over kill though? (bearing in mind what most people are going to be listening on - mp3 etc.)

Agreed – this is overkill in my opinion too, but you can still use 192kHz-sampled presets at lower sample rates (they just take longer to load, due to the conversion process).
