      #1039661 - 24/03/13 08:07 PM
Hi,

I'm considering adding an fire express card to my laptop to use with my Presonus Studiolive desk.

Would this be ok for recording audio and mixing via wifi ipad?

Have a look at Siig cards. Specifically the FireWire 2-Port ExpressCard
NN-EC2012-S2. It has the TI chip that is usually recommended for audio applications.

Not had any recent experience, but one thing that caught me out when I got one a few years ago for a macbook pro, was that it didn't carry power ie the Focusrite Saffire that ran off bus power no longer did so via the expresscard firewire (the usb ones were fine - it was a 1xfirewire 400 2 x USB2 card) . It worked fine with the adapter but I was expecting it to behave the same as any on board port and supply power.

Well, there is a stickied thread just above for "Your Recommended FireWire Adaptor Cards" but it's not really been contributed to very much.

Have you thought of consulting Presonus' current compatibility list of approved FW chips/cards?:

Might be a good place to start...

Thanks for the replies! I'll have a good read on the links you've posted. Do firewire express cards work reliably for recording audio?

I've had a look round to check out the price of these various firewire express. This is what I've found so far :-

Startech EC13942A2 - £29.21 inc p&p

Siig NN-EC2012-S2 - £37.33 + p&p

Interestingly, I've found this firewire express card for £16.27. This appears to use the same Texas Instruments XIO2200 chipset.

Does anyone have any experience with these cards?

What would you recommend from the three cards I've listed here?
