WHAT LAPTOP SHOULD I GET?! Yeah...
      #1053021 - 18/06/13 02:30 AM
So my desktop is taking adump on me, and I'm looking to get something a little more portable.

Was looking at some Hp and Asus laptops, along with macbooks.

I am fairly new to music production and looking to buy something good for beginning with that will last at least a year if not two, but also something cheaper since I am on a budget.

I have around 250-400 to spend, and need help!

I run Ableton Live 9 Intro and Massive at the moment and thats it, along with M-Audio monitors and my MPK49 keyboard.

Also will be using it just to surf the web and basic music.

I know I am looking for something like...

2.0+ Ghz
4GB+ Ram
250+ HD

And I'm thinking thats at minimum, I have been looking online and this is about the only thing I have found so far for specs and whats compatable with what I will be running...

Any ideas on a good cheaper laptop I can run my DAW and Vsts with, on the cheaper end?

Thanks!

Is that 250-400 GBP or USD? To be honest even if its GBP you might better off going with a windows machine as you're going to get a lot more power for your money.

USD... I was looking at these two... duno if either are good for my needs.

I'm pretty new to all this computer stuff...

HP Pavillion dv6-3210

Screen Size 15.6"
3GHz AMD Phenom II Dual-Core N660
4GB (2x2GB) RAM
Capacity: 8GB RAM
500GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics
Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

Or maybe?

Asus Ultrabook

11.6" Touch-screen
Windows 8 (with recovery partition)
Intel i3 dual-core processor
4GB DDR3 memory
500GB @ 5400 RPM hard drive

Otherwise I'm probably just going to end up getting and used 2008+ unibody macbook pro.

Along the lines of 2.2+ GHz, 4GB RAM, 250+ HD.

What sort of AI have you got/thinking of getting JK? And what do you intend to do with it?

I have an HP i3 g6 Win 7/64,4Gram and it runs Cubase LE6 in and out of an NI KA6 just fine. It is also remarkably quiet.

It cost me just shy of £400 a year ago, present from the wife (well! She said I could spend some of my pension lump!). I dare say I could have got it cheaper had I cast my net wider?

Dave.

I'm mainly using it for ableton and music production but I think instead of worrying about what goes into a windows laptop for audio, I'm just gonna roll with a macbook knowing I shouldnt have to worry much at all as a beginner.

Found this macbook for $400.00

I think I may get it since they upgraded it to 8GB RAM. And it looks pretty nice.

2009 Unibody white

13.3" screen
2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7550 processor
8 gb ram
250 gb hdd
OSX 10.8.3 Mountain Lion

Or this one for $375...

2009 Unibody white

13" Macbook
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.16 Ghz
10.7.5 for the OSX
500 GB Hard Drive
2 GB RAM

While those specs are perfectly adequate to make music with, they aren't that great either. The white Macbook is ok, its a better design than most of the competition at the time, but its really a huge step down from the aluminium Macbook Pros.

First of all, the screens on the Pros are gorgeous, easy to see from all angles and generally just very good quality. The white macbooks are more in the 'crappy pc' category. The case is plastic and feels a lot cheaper than the aluminium models.

Also, these computers are getting a little long in the tooth. Its true Macs do tend to have relatively long lives, but the battery life inevitably suffers, and technology marches on every year ...

The old white macbooks definitely do not have relatively long lives.
