Which is the best Plextor CD/DVD writer (internal). By best I mean produces the best
quality writes / fewest errors on Taiyo Yuden stock. Speed is not particularly important
as I generally write at 8x or even 4x for best results.
I am a bit out of
touch, I thought Plextor had gone out of business about 2 years ago??
Once I
get a model number I will search for a supplier in the UK, but if anyone can a supplier
that will be great.
Thanks,
Mike

Plextor make
more than CD writers. Before the demise of their drive subcontractor, they had started
getting into video capture and external hard drives. They have also had a long standing
interest in aids for the visually handicapped.
The only true Plextor drive
currently available is the Premium 2. Early versions were made in China but they've been
making them in Japan recently. The Japanese version is fairly expensive though. Try Amazon
first and, if they don't have them, try looking at http://www.plextor.be for more sources.
Cheers
James.

Well I am glad you chipped in there James I was beginning to wonder what was going on with
some sites saying that Plextors are just re-badged Liteons.
Problem is the
Premium2 is only available in white and I have just built an expensive gleaming black
tower PC, that's going to look really odd And there are so few places that sell them, also very odd.
Now
when you say early versions were made in China, how will I know which is a later version,
or is the ‘2’ in the name a giveaway?
Thanks,
Mike

I'd check your info about only being available in white. I have two, while the first was a
pre-production sample in white, the second was the production version that came with
additional black and silver front bezels. My current PC is silver so I probably still have
a spare black bezel sitting around if you need it. I know that John Willett has a more
recent Japanese version so he would know what comes in the box better than I do.
There isn't really any way to tell whether the drive is Chinese or Japanese apart from
looking at the label (as far as I know). I think that they are mainly producing them for
the Japanese audiophile market since it has a few features (like Audio Master Quality
Recording) that probably wouldn't be used by sensible mastering engineers. If you leave
the slightly dubious features turned off the drive will produce excellent CD's. A few of
these drives have reached Europe but they're not available at all in North America.
Cheers
James.
