Two bootable partitions (Windows and Linux) possible on a single physical hard-drive?
      #784664 - 04/11/09 03:49 PM

Out of curiousity I'm going to try installing Ubuntu for general stuff.

I have three physical hard-drives. Each already has a Windows OS on the primary partition at the front of each drive - WinXP, Vista64 and Win7-64. I don't want to uninstall them yet, as I optimised them each for different applications and have unfinished projects on them.

So that leaves me no room to create any partitions that start before the 1024 cylinder boundary on any physical harddrive. I even had to extend my XP-32 partition to 20GB, which rules that out.

Is it possible to create an extra bootable partition on one of the drives (for Ubuntu)? Or not? I'm not sure how relevant the 1024 cylinder boundary thing is, or as to whether you can mix different bootable operating systems on the same drive.

Cheers,
Timo

hey timo.

i've installed ubuntu on top of my vista partition, IE: load up the vista O/S, insert ubuntu disc, and there is an option to install it in vista as a software program. then when you re-boot, it allows you to pick between the two O/S's...

but, i did it in my test system, because i was worried too. i would suggest maybe, if you can, to get a HDD that won't gut you completely if it falls over, to experiement with.

i have done it tho.

hope this helps.

Ubuntu is cool Timo, you will like it I am sure. I am certainly no Linux expert, far from it but Ubuntu is a nice experience coming from Windows XP etc. I have only used Ubuntu Studio though but the differences are not that great overall.
