video DVD query
      #785115 - 05/11/09 11:08 PM

I have recently got around to getting some old video cassettes of bands I used to play in burned to DVD in an attempt to have a more permanent back up.

I have managed to burn the things on to my recordable DVD player and they will play back on it.

I'd like to clean them up in Vegas Video and e-mail them to old band members. The problem is that the PC (for some reason) isn't reading the DVD (file manager tells me that the disk is blank when clearly it is not).

My PC and DVD recorder will both play back commercially recorded disks, and the disks I am using are the same DVDs that I use to save regular stuff (including Video) on computer. So what is the likeliest reason that the PC won't recognise the DVD? And how do I get around it? My best guess is that the DVD recorder is coding the DVDs in a format that the PC can't read but the recorder can.

Hi Wadeal
My guess is that the DVD hasn't been finalised by the recorder.
hope this helps

Remember that recording video to DVD is just like recording audio to mp3. You are throwing away quite a bit of data in the mpeg compression process. Any cleaning up you do will involve decompression and then recompression so it would be a good idea to save any intermediate files as DV format .avi files.

I realise that we're talking about VHS tapes here so the quality won't be great to start with but things start looking really horrible if you go through too many stages of compression.

Cheers

James.

If you have been finalising the DVD as per the above suggestion, the other thing it could be is that you've used an incompatible disc format, and by that I mean the actual data formatting structure not the physical type. Not sure if the terminolgy is the same for other brands, but on my Sony DVD recorder, when formatting a disk it gives me two options, one is called video mode, the other escapes me for now (VR Mode maybe?). Video mode is the one which is compatible with the DVD spec and will mean that your disk will work on other players. The other mode is a little better for setting things like chapter points after the event and minor details like that but will only play in the type of machine you made the disk with.

If you've made discs using the wrong format, I think you'll need to start again from scratch.
