Hi All.
I have recently installed W7 64bit on a partition next to my standard
xp. Was attracted to 64bit because even though I have 4GB of memory in my PC I can
only see 2.59GB of it (probably due to my UAD1, UAD2 and Powercore cards)
My
question is, that although Cubase, my MR816x and UAD's have 64bit drivers/versions and I
have sent off for the beta 64bit driver for the powercore, the other software I use
doesn't have spcific 64 versions written for them, will they work in a 64 bit operating
system? will I need to use Jbridge?
Software I currently use...
BFD-2 Halion string edition NI Pro - 53, B4 2, electrik/acoustik piano
BFD eats 1gb on its own, so its annoying they don`t do a 64bit one.
Any
advice? the plan would be to put 2 x 2GB sticks in slots 1 & 2 to get 6GB total of
which I would expect to see 4.5 GB in windows...

You should see all 6 GB in windows. If not, you'll need to tweak a BIOS option somewhere
to map the extra memory to an address above 4GB so that it doesn't clash with device IO
addresses.
I believe you will need to use jbridge or similar to use 32 bit
plugins in 64 bit cubase, but as I understand it each bridged plugin runs in a seperate
process so even 32 bit ones will have more space to play with.

Echoing what Mark said, you should be able to see, and use, all of the RAM installed on
your machine with a 64-bit operating system. I don't use Cubase, but I would think there
would be a bridge feature built in to the framework that would allow you to use 32-bit
plugs with no problem. I could be wrong though, in which case you'd have to use jbridge or
something similar.

Hi thanks but are you saying that I should be able to use all of my 4GB of ram in 64bit
now?
It can see its there but only says 2.69 GB usable... so I need a do
something in the BIOS to make it see all of it yes?
if so what...

You should be able to SEE all of your RAM from the OS
perspective, however your applications may or may not be able to make use of it all,
depending on their code. This makes sense as you don't want one item taking all the
resources aside from what the OS wants... Its the same in the 32 bit environment, only you
get less to work with!
So once the world catches up with 64 bit life, we will
see great improvements. Currently Cubase 5 64bit does not handle some 32bit plugs well
(Synthedit based) and I've been reading that jbridge is the way to go. The cubase formum
is a good place to watch that evolve or not! (cubase.net)
In the interim, if
your board supports bigger RAM modules, go for it!
Cheers

It depends on the motherboard / BIOS. It was called something
like "memory remapping" in the northbridge menu on my desktop, my laptop seems to do it
automatically when I switch from 32 to 64 bit though.

Upgarded BIOS windows 7 won`t boot now...EZ flash won`t let me load an older BIOS Doh!
Found memory remapping, that gives me 3GB in XP so its a start.
Startup
repair is now trying to fix the partition 7 is on.
Jaminem is having another

Normally it's the other way round - alcohol makes things seem better when they're often
worse in reality
Well done for bucking the trend

The irony is, the day after I turned ACPI off again, and it sill works fine!!
In case anyone is interested I am at the following stage with my 64bit install
MR816x works about 90% with the legacy firewire driver (i.e. I get the odd dropout but
seems fairly stable) UAD works 100% fine Cubase works fine, unless you give it a
plugin it doesn`t like then it freezes Halion String edition won`t play at all NI Komplete classics work but they are sometimes a bit sluggish loading sample
libraries Still waiting for TC to send me the beta poco drivers Win 7 boots
quicker, and after the memory re-map recognises all 4GB of RAM Am trying BFD2 next...
