The dummies guide to 64 bit.....!?
      #785490 - 07/11/09 03:42 PM

Hey all!

Hope you're well.

I've been doing fine, thank you, with my quad core studio PC for the past 1 1/2 years....but recently I bought East West Play, and I'm starting to feel I need more memory, as I also have Spectrasonics Stylus RMX and Superior Drummer, and Kontakt and using them altogether does stretch my memory, often to the point of Cubase 5 crashing...

My understanding is that a 64 bit operating system would benefit me hugely.
But where to start?!?

1. Windows 7 or XP 64 or Vista 64? Isn't Windows 7 a bit young to be using in audio pc's?

2. My soundcard is RME and the drivers are fine for 64bit, but what about my graphics card? do I need 64 bit drivers for that?

3. I use Cubase 5, but is there a particular Cubase 5 version..surely I dont have to shell out more dosh for it?!

4. This bridge thingy for using 32 bit programs in 64 bit....how does that work then?! Sounds a bit complicated...!

Like I say, I'm a bit befuzzled by it all...would appreciate any help!

Cheers!

1. I'm running Win 7 64 and love it for audio, from what I can tell the general recommendation is that 64-bit xp is a little hard to find drivers and such but as always there will be those who are running it just fine.

2. Yes you will need 64-bit graphics card drivers.

3. Cubase comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit installers, you can in fact install both versions on the same OS. I run the 64-bit one when using East West Play as they have a 64-bit plug-in version. Then open up the same project in 32-bit Cubase and mix it using my 32-bit plug-ins.

4. The bridge 'thingy' is not for programs but for using 32-bit plugins within a 64-bit audio program. I haven't tried it myself but people on the cubase forums report mixed results at present. You could also check out j-bridge, a third party plugin bridge.

Hope that helps a bit

Hi Will, thats a great help thanks!

I'm quite surprised that windows 7 works so well so quickly...I kinda imagined there would be a year or so before it was totally trustworthy with audio.

Did you have to tweak it the same way we all tweak XP to make it work better with audio?

No problem, I've been using it since the beta version and had far less problems than I ever did with xp. Although to be fair when I upgraded to seven I upgraded all my hardware too. I guess it hasn't been out long enough to know for sure how reliable it will be for audio use but just wanted to rely my positive experience with 7 and C5.

As for tweaking, I have done very little, but as I upgraded to quite a powerful machine I havn't found the need to squeeze any extra performance from it yet. I run it on an audio only partition, so no internet or any uneccasary programs and hence processes to contend with. The main tweaks I did were power related, just disabling screensavers and cpu saving modes etc.

EWQL PLAY is a 'special' case. In an otherwise perfectly functioning system, it often doesn't.

Hi Rousseau,

yeah... a whole new can of worms you've opened up here!
Actually they say on the box of the Orchestral Play that 64bit operating system is the minimum requirement!

I've had my ups and downs with it...but it does sound great so I've persevered. I do hate the continuous hard sell from them, though I understand its a business...just lay off a bit lads, huh?!

I think i'll set up a new partition with Windows 7- make it a kinda "future" pc, and keep using my regular partition for work in the meantime- till evrything on the 64bit one is as stable as poss..
