After reading on the Focusrite website that there firewire products are compatible with
Windows 7 (using Legacy Firewire Driver) I thought I would do the upgrade as I am
inbetween projects and it wouldnt affect my workflow.
Having set up Windows 7,
I cannot get the card too work. I have tried using the Legacy Firewire Driver with no
luck.
My motherboard is an ASUS P5Q-WS, I have updated the Bios to the latest
firmware available hoping this might resolve the situation... but again, no luck.
Is there anyone on this forum that can give me some pointers of things I can try as I am
fast running out of hope

Have you updated the firmware in the Saffire to the latest rev? Dunno if it would make a
difference, but what about trying with the Saffire external PSU?

IIRC the Legacy FireWire drivers don't work with 64-bit Win7, only 32-bit.

After updating the BIOS, uninstall the drivers and then re-install them once more, running
the driver installer in a compatibility mode (e.g. XP if available).
Also, if
you have onboard sound on the motherboard, have you tried turning that on and see if
Windows recognises that.

I'm in the middle of installing a Saffire 56. It completely freaked out at first but
after doing the legacy Firewire thing (which does work on 64bit version) it works
great: http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/article.php?id=1030 However, performance with Win7 64 has not been astounding - getting crackles way before
the CPU meter maxes out so i think i still have a lot of work to do

You could try giving focusrite a call since you're in the UK anyway. I actually spoke to
them today about a problem I had with the (mac) driver for the Pro 40 - they were really
helpful. We went through the issue and in the end they gave me a beta driver which worked
a treat.

Have you looked to make sure that the firewire chip on your mobo is in line with
Focusrite's recommendations, namely Texas Instruments or VIA?
I tried a Saffire
(Pro 26) on a no-name firewire card and it didn't work (neither did an FR Liquid Mix). But
in a card with a TI firewire chip, both devices work fine. Look inside Device
Manager->IEEE 1394 Device to see what type of chip your firewire card/port is.
FWIW i just installed Windows 7 yesterday, and already i can tell that firewire
performance is improved...PCI latency (measured by DPC) is quite a bit better than the
same setup under Vista.
