If you have an MS Windows installation disk, you should definitely be able to boot your PC
with it...have you looked inside your bios to make sure that the CD drive is selected as
the first boot device?
Plan B might be to copy files from the disk onto your
HDD and try the installation that way (may or may not work).
Plan C is google
"install Win XP" and look for diskette files that will allow you to do the installation --
i recall finding and using a no-fail series of 5 diskettes that boots up your PC and
prepares for an XP installation. (ie. you download the files and transfer them onto 3.5"
diskettes...of course you need the appropriate drive on your machine).
Regards
Glenn

no none of that works, and can't find an iso to get me booting into xp.
looks
like it would work if my ms dos boot disc would at least recognise the command 'R' for
repair but that doesnt even do anything but give me bad command rr

even A:\>format c: from my dos disc won't work what has Vista done to my machine,
Microsoft sure make downgrading a mission, and at the moment its seeming like mission
impossible

Hoorah - I've done it! for some reason my other original XP disc (without any service
packs) worked and booted.
Why I have no idea.
But I will never
install Vista again, and am very sorry for even considering it.

XP CDs came in two classes. Full installs and cheap upgrade versions. (You didn't really
think I was going to be able to make the rhyme work, did you?)
The upgrade
versions weren't bootable. And yes, its a pain.
Make sure you get all the
patches!

Were you using the Vista SP1? That's a joke. However, in its current state, it's not a bad
OS by any standards. Heck, it was fine once SP2 was released.
Either way, you
should be skipping Vista completely and going straight to Win7!

Get a copy of DBAN, it's a disk of mass destruction, blow anything away, except the smell
of my feet!

As with any new OS release ... wait! ... for niggles to be
de-niggled, and drivers for your gear to be written for the released version of Windows 7

Obviously hold out if there's something not supported. But most
things seem to be working pretty much flawlessly from what I've seen (even from beta),
even if it has to use Legacy drivers/compatibility mode. I'd install it on a small
partition first to test it out, but there's not a whole lot that isn't supported.
