SSD replacement for 3XS laptop with Seagate Momentus 7200 drive

Hello!
I have a Scan 3XS audio laptop, which has a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB drive. I believe my laptop
supports SATA2 drives like this one.
I would like to replace this drive with
an SSD one for faster boot times and response and to minimize the risk of disk failure (I
use the laptop for live gigs).
Which SATA2 SSD would you recommend for best
performance/price? (capacity: min 80GB - cost: no more than 150 euros)
Thanks!

Best value wise this week I've noticed we're locked in a price war with a few other firms
on the 120GB Sandisk Ultra drives. Offical spec looks about as good as it gets with SATA
II althrough I'd check some reviews to see if it lives up to it's claims.
Expect not to pay more than £70 where ever you pick it up from and if your lucky it'll
be closer to £60.

Thank you Pete for your response! It looks very nice indeed!.. especially for the price.., but from some reviews I read I
got the impression that it has average speed. Not taking price into account,
any other recommendations? Would a SATA III drive work on a SATA II
motherboard? If yes, would it have the maximum speed offered by SATA II? Would it be
reliable? What do you think about this one?: OCZ Agility 3 120GB AGT3-25SAT3 [priced at 81GBP] Quote Pete Kaine:

I read that SATA III drives can be used with a SATA II motherboard, so maybe I should go
for a SATA III drive to be more future-proof.
I think I lean towards the
Samsung 830 128GB (100GBP). I read it is one of the most reliable and has very good
performance. What do you think?

I recently installed a Crucial 128Gb drive. Amazon LinkIt is fast, but I have nothing to compare it
to.

Yeah, your right. I
don't bother trying to future proof with drives through as the prices are still coming
down and you tend to replace them every few years anyhow.
You are right that a
Sata III drive will run at Sata II speeds, but it looks the Sandisk is rated to pretty
much max out Sata II althrough as noted in verious reviews can slow down when working with
compressed data, so perhaps not idea, but then I don't know what data your putting on
it!
The OCZ's were great for a while but have been superceeded by a few other
models now and are pretty much middle of the pack.
The Crucial drives Richie
mentions have one of the best fail rates i've seen, but your hampered by a rather slow
write speed. Fine for sound banks but not ideal if your running your OS off it and need to
write all the time.
Money no object? Intel/Samsung/Corsair is where I'd be
looking.... perhaps discount the Intels for the rather large prices I'd take a crack at
the Samsung/Corsair models and see if any take your fancy.

I think I should wait a couple of weeks for the prices to go down more... The Crucial M4
looks nice too..

Not fully SSD, but hybrid: I use the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB for recording 26 channel
live sessions without any hickups. On a Dell latitude D630 laptop. XP boot time and
frequent applications startup reduced to about 50%. Cheap and fast. A bit noisy, but
that's the only downside I can come up with, and certainly no problem when recording
music.
There have been some problems with the firmware, especially with Apple
hardware (not on my setup) but I believe the latest version has solved all troubles.

I chose Crucial because of their longstanding rep in the memory
world. I'm glad it seems like I have got a 'safer' one and I'm sure that the "slow write
speed" is still faster than a platter HD!

Only just Richie!
But yeah, if your not using it as a write heavy solution,
its a very good & safe option to go with
And the Hybrid drives are pretty good. I use them in laptops and they tend to half the
boot time but still offer you 500GB for not a lot of money. Not a lot of cache on them
through so don't expect much more than quicker access times when booting and loading
software.
