SVCHOST.EXE - can I stop them and keep them from coming back?
      #992620 - 13/06/12 12:01 PM
Hi -

I have half a dozen or so SVCHOST.EXE instances running, including 2 for network services (I don't have a network, or get on the internet with that computer), and they total up to almost 40 MB.

I've looked hard and except for 1 or 2 but haven't figured out how to tell which ones are OK to delete, and which ones aren't, it would be nice to squeeze a few extra 10s MB of RAM out!

Does anyone know a) how I can tell if it's safe to stop their process from Task Manager, b) how to keep them from popping back up?

Thanks!

These are Norton processes, so you would need to disable all elements of Norton, in Norton itself or in the Task Bar.

There is no way of knowing which of these SVHOSTs are what, so you can't determine which one's you can terminate.

So if you are not attached to the internet, disable Norton.

Just remember to activate Norton once you want to reconnect to the internet.

Hi, not sure if I'm missing something but don't see where Norton was mentioned? They are programs running DLLs so could be something like Norton but could be something else. Best thing is to trim your startup services down to what you really need. There are some guides on SOS on how to tweak XP by disabling services down to the minimum.

Sorry I forgot, in Windows 7 just right click on the SVCHOST and go to 'go to Service' and this will show you what it is loading for (can't of the top of my head remember the XP way of checking). Check the larger MB ones, I suspect they are probably important but if it's networking features then these services can be disabled in MSConfig (check SOS guides)

With a Carillon system most of these will be applied but as you know you aren't using your network port etc you can still trim it down a little further still

...checks facts.....hangs head in shame....it was Norton for me when I had the problem though, honest guv. But yes, it can be any Windows hosted service.

Carillon is correct. SVCHOST.EXE ("Service Host") is an executable container for DLL's.

First up, I would advise leaving well alone. Disabling services can have highly unpredictable results. Is it really worth the risk to claw back 1-2% of system memory?

Having said that, Task Manager -> Processes - > processes from all users -> right click on instance of SVCHOST.EXE -> 'Go to Services' will show you what they're running.

For a more detailed examination, try:

Thanks for all the answers, everyone.

I have XP, so my right click capabilities are not as helpful in identifying.

(Mr. Carillon was right - no Norton).

For XP:

1.Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
2.In the Open box, type CMD, and then press ENTER.
3.Type Tasklist /SVC, and then press ENTER.

For more information about a process, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Tasklist /FI "PID eq processID" (with the quotation marks)

That's great, Johnsy, thanks! Just testing it on my work computer now, steps 1-3 seem to be all I need to identify the process. The "Tasklist/FI ..." step didn't add any info - they all said "Session Name - Console". But the 1st 3 steps are great - it tells me what processes that specific SVCHOST.EXE is associated with.

When I get home I'll see how all this looks on the DAW. Maybe I won't be able to end any of the processes, but who knows, maybe there are some that I will be able to, and get a few more RAM out of.

Thanks again -

Sorry Alexis - the last part is only relevant to XP Pro.

I still wouldn't go disabling services unless you're encountering a specific problem - and then only after a great deal of research.

Too weird, Johnsy - the command "Tasklist/SVC" , or indeed even "Tasklist" is recognized in my DAW computer (though it is on this one I am typing on now)! I did the "Help" to see the list of commands available, and it wasn't there.

I may look to find the command to add a command to the .cmd list. This may wait a bit, as I think I'm learning since then that I may get more performance bang for the buck by focusing on my graphics card. But I'll keep track of this thread/your post - thank you!
