Visual Analyser ref July PC Notes
      #994939 - 27/06/12 07:02 AM
Hi.
I have installed "2010 NE-XT v2.4 on my XP P4 and it looks luverly! Trouble is when I squirt 1V rms in from my trusty Levell TG200 OSC' I cannot calibrate it. Clicking on the help tab reveals nothing.

I have tried emailing the site but the demon keeps bouncing back the message. I KNOW it is something simple this old computer klutz hasn't grasped!

Dave.

Hi Dave,

I love this utility, but it can take a bit of unravelling the first few times you use it

1. Click on the 'Settings' button at top left, then on the Calibrate tab of the window that pops up.

2. Now enter 'Volts' and 'RMS' in the Units box.

3. Next, make sure that 'Level of known input signal (units)' is 1.0

4. Click on the 'Start measure signal (L)' to pick up the output from your trusty Levell TG200 OSC

5. Finally, tick the 'Apply calibration left channel' box to calibrate Visual Analyser to this input signal.

Hope this helps!

Martin

Thank you Martin,
I was on the right lines but you have to be careful that the utility is "on"! The infernal thing can be off and not be obviously so.
I changed the Known Level to 1.001 since that is as close as I can set the osc' (using a Fluke 83 dmm) but that worked fine. My problem now is that I cannot save the calibration. I have tried all the permutations I can think of and still I have to reset every time I fire up the app'.

Then, I clicked "input gain" and got "There is a problem with your soundcard (2496)To install mixer devices go to ConP and click Printers and Other Hardware......" There is no such icon in CP.

I saved a spectrum. Nice to see my old oscillator is -80dB 2nd harmonic of 1kHz (but why does the main SA screen read 1kHz as 4 kHz and harmonics pro-rata?). Trouble is the spectrum saves as a .tee file and I cannot open it!...Knew where I was with RightMark! What I need is a big .pdf handbook to printout.

Such fun. Thanks again Martin.

Dave.

You should be able to Save tour calibration using the Save button on that same calibration page. I suspect this automatically loaded on future launches yet, but it's easy enough to click on the Load button to get it back

Visual Analyser is an 'on-going' project with real potential. It does have some teething troubles at the moment, but I find it so useful for waveform, harmonic analysis, THD and AC voltage measurements that I'm prepared to persevere.

For anyone who is interested: here is the link to the program, now version 2011 is possible too!

http://www.sillanumsoft.org/download.htm

It was made by an Italian guy who works with a Roman university!
In case you want you can donate him some money too or help with the help section:

Hi Johhny!

Yes, I did name check Alfredo Accattatis (of the University of Rome) in my PC Notes column as well as providing the link

Here it is: www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul12/articles/pc-notes-0712.htm#2

By the way, I've since downloaded the 2012 Beta version (go to the forum as a guest to do so), and it does seem more stable as well as having some extra features (still largely undocumented though )
