I would think some kind of 3d CAD program would be best for producing computers !

Hello all; This is my first post so this seems a good place to wade into the
water. I started with Cakewalk products then tried Cubase and Vegas before
coming back to Cakewalk. In the last year I've gone to Reaper and back to SONAR X1,
demoed Studio One as well as Pro Tools 10. They are all good products but SONAR seems to
be the most friendly to new users and the best all around experience. The
Cakewalk forums are full of people that are willing to fall all over themselves to help
people who won't read manuals or use forum searches, so if you put in the least little
effort on your own and add the peer to peer help from that forum, I feel it's the best
bang for the buck going.

I do think the 'best' software is simply the one that best suits a particular person's
brain! I've used Cubase and Logic, and find that Cubase feels a little more... natural,
for me, overall. From one point of view, Pro Tools is the 'best' because it is the
industry standard, and there is certainly some value in staying in step with the rest of
the world, particulary if you are a music professional. But according to Dawbench site,
Pro Tools 9 performs waay less well than its competitors in terms of its ability to host a
large quantity of virtual instruments... I did try Reaper (for a few hours only) and
rather struggled with it... though that's probably because I'm so firmly entrenched in the
world of Cubase! So... Cubase gets my vote!

Best for beginners - Guitar Hero
Best for you -

I don't wish to downmouth fellow posters, but I'm guessing the original poster is someone
with troll-like tendencies (his questions seem deliberately naive, on topics known to
cause heated debate).
Hence my previous non-too-serious comment.
Having said all that, the best DAW is Sonar. There. I said it.

Still using those linear DAWs, Grandads ?
Ableton is the future.
Now
onto a more interesting debate: can you hear the difference between different hard drives
?

Um... Cubase gives you the choice of being linear or loop based. As do many others.
Nothing new about that either. I remember my first PC MIDI sequencer (Prism), way
back in the 80s, wasn't linear either.
Ableton is... well, pretty much the
same as all the others really. A neat starting point that soon got bloated out with the
features available in other DAWs...

Actually the Cubase workflow speed is inversely proportional to
age, whilst maintaining a logarithmic trajectory to patience, talent and actual music
creation..

Soooo. It's obvious really. The best possible software, is whatever you find
most enjoyable and productive to use. Go out, try stuff, and find out.

Well that certainly seems true as well, but when you've got a few moments to spare then
why not contribute if you feel your answer might be helpful to someone else Martin

Two reasons:
Every so often an idiot (like me) asks a
question that others might be interested in but haven't yet asked. There will always be
new folks.
It gives us a chance to give it "my Dad's bigger than your Dad"
without actually instigating the topic. Or appear aloof and reasonable by refusing to do
so even though we could.

Martin
no disrespect but do you feel anyone can contribute positively to a post asking what
software is the best without any mention of musical style, budget, objective, work
profile, platform etc?
really? seriously?

Ok, serious answer? The Caviar blacks have deeper
and slightly wider platter grooves than the Seagate ones, so your bass reproduction is
fuller with more weight. True story.

I'm prefering the one in Geist at the moment.

Ok, I'll bite. The future may indeed be bits of wigs, but I have no idea what you are
talking about. Should I ask, or would I regret doing that ?

You'd have to be blindfolded and taken to

It's alright Martin. He's
already a SecretSam so I reckon we can trust him... that and I've already got a load of
stuff on this weekend without spending time escorting a blindfolded agent to Ber... err
that place!
