Beck is releasing a new album... in a strange way
      #1002411 - 08/08/12 07:15 PM

So Beck is releasing a new album and recording none of it.
It will be sheet music only with some art, and to hear it you'll have to play it yourself.
Or wait for someone else to do it and record it I guess.

Strange, but great in a way.

This is the cynical answer to every post asking 'how can I protect my music from being pirated'... Don't record it...

He is a funny one! I'm sure youtube will be littered with covers.

I like his Record Club idea

The record club idea is brilliant and it has had some awesome results.
This latest stunt seems a bit silly but I still like it, I enjoy that he is trying to do something a little unique. Always pushing himself it seems.

Doubtless MCPS will be up in arms about people photocopying the sheetmusic without paying royalties...

Yeah. I wonder how they are going to deal with royalty and copyright issues on this one.

It's not like it is a stopgap EP or collection of nonesense.

He has taken the time and is releasing what he is calling an album, he must want some money from the whole exercise.

Well, maybe not, he might have enouhg. Either way, interesting to think about.

Wow, a nod at the past to move us forward. Smart idea! No recording costs and I'd guess a few sheets of paper are cheaper to print and distribute than CDs. Bring on the 21st century front parlour recitals

Out of interest, has he released a "full score" on the sheet music, or is it just a top-line and piano accompanyment? Or guitar tab? or wot?

Quote:

The package measures 9.5” x 12.5” with 108 pages comprising 20 individual full-color song booklets—18 featuring original lyrics, and 2 instrumentals—with covers from more than a dozen different artists.

Quote:

and, when necessary, ukelele notation

It is a little vague on how comprehensive the notation of each song will be, this is from his website and I can find no more detail than that.
I hope he gives a complete score of each.

This is a publicity stunt surely?

Beck has made a few good tracks over the years with some cutting edge production - I am kind of a fan - however, he must have at least demoed these songs - its not like he is mozart and has imagined the whole thing and written it down on sheet music without hearing a note. Perhaps he has worked out he won't be able to get his recording costs back as music downloads are failing to make up for the loss of sales of physical media.

Good on him for trying something different though!

Norwegian band Kaizers Orchestra did a similar thing in 2010 as a marketing ploy - they released the sheet music for their then-unreleased single 'Hjerteknuser' (Heartbreaker) and invited people to interpret and record their versions. They got quite a variety of interpretation in response many of which can be found on youtube. Obviously they've not got quite the global reach of Beck...but a nice idea nonetheless.

Really great band live, by the way, if you ever see their name on a poster.

A hundred years ago, music publishing was focussed on sheet music, not recordings. It is a well-tried model !

And yes, copying the sheet music is a breach of copyright, just like copying a recording. As every user of The Real Book knows.

Just for interest, all the Kaisers Orchestra competition entries are at the foot of this page http://www.nrk.no/urort/articleWP.aspx?p=5055

That's about the only way I could put up with his music anyway, a sheet of paper lying about not making any noise at all!

Like Beck'ham, I just don't get him, he's ok'ish but not compelling

When uttered quickly sheet music sounds like something else!

I think it's genius. Hear 100 amateurs play the songs badly on YouTube then come and hear me play them properly live.

No point in recording the songs so losers can give them away for free. Fans will record them and do my advertising for me.

All cool.

Good point well made - if he leaves it a few months then does the tour, the tickets will sell in a heartbeat. I will probably be one of those amateurs playing the songs badly so, as a way to sell your music, this has mileage IMO.

Well when you put it that way, it's rather genius.
