Deeply, deeply saddening. Here was a man who helped to define a whole genre of music.
Sad to see you go, Jon. RIP.

I was never a massive Deep Purple fan, but I loved what he did to underpin what that band
did. And I liked some of his later classical work. Plus he was one of the more
intelligent talking heads that turned up on those nostalgia programs.
I find
that I don't have anything by him here to listen to tonight, so I'm off to YouTube.

Bad news. I've fired up Wring that Neck - first Deep Purple I've played through my B&W
MM1's - sounds pretty good, even in elegiac mode.

+1. But hearing this again after, what, 40
years (!) it somehow sounds better to me now than then.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OorZcOzNcgE

This is true. Also keyboards were somewhat
uncool in rock at the time. He changed that. Some of my friends would never have
considered a career in rock were it not for him. He was part of a new surge in music that
would make the 70s what it was, the most creative drug fuelled decade ever. What a time
that was! We may never see the likes again. His passing will be a landmark day for many
rockers.

Can't really add to what others have said. Another sad loss. He and Emerson defined rock
organ for me. CC

I just recently watched that BBC 4 doco about the British invasion during the 70's. There
is no doubting what a great time that was for music, the seeds of which were sown in the
fertile 60's of course.
I'm sad about the passing of any members of this golden
period, and will always be regardless of their excesses - especially those with the towers
of keyboards. I was never happier as a youngster as when I put my first synth on top of
the old family unwanted Hammond home organ!

Very sad. He was one of my all time musical heros. Got the chance to help out on a
recording of his Durham Concerto at Durham Cathedral a few years ago. Amazing guy. Sad
loss.
