Patchbay cleaning
      #1001034 - 01/08/12 05:20 AM
What are some useful steps I need to take to retain a clean, noise-free patch bay?
I own the Neutrik NYS-SPP-L1.

http://www.neutrik.com/en/products/audio/patch-panels/1-4-patch-panel/

I do have a bottle of CRC Switch and contact cleaner, but I don't like the idea of spraying a foreign liquid into my equipment without knowing how to do it properly. PLease excuse the 'noob' tone of this question.

Cheers

You're okay with the cleaners and they won't harm the contacts or connections. Of course, don't splash it all over a la Henry.

I also use Deoxit Gold for , as our dear friend Russ would say, 'optimum and radical sonic improvement'. Bollox of course but it does make for a cleaner contact (why did that come across as a bit pornish?).

I would avoid cleaning just for the hell of it. Jack sockets are essentially self cleaning anyway as long as they are used regularly, and you rotate the plugs now and again. Try to keep dust out (so mount patch panels vertically, rather than horizontally if you can). If they are showing signs of noise and didgy contacts then the DeOxit cleaners are very good. Follow the istructions on the can.

Also, make sure you're only routing what NEEDS to be routed through the patchbay. In the days of outboard gear I used one - realised that some of the patches didn't EVER get changed and that the input panel of my mixer was perfectly accessible. So it was really just being an extra potential point of failure, and I ditched it.
